A GREAT BLACK BEAST BLOTTED OUT THE SUN like an eclipse foretold by religious heads, their mouths oozing with the words of saviour, warrior, destroyer. They had watched the flames for days, focused on the way they danced atop the stone brazier.
The flames went out.
The day Rhaenerys Targaryen was born, the sun was blotted out the moment her cries were heard around the birthing chambers. The septas became still at the sudden darkness that flowed through the room, like a shadow snuffling the candles and pulling forth the darkness. A harsh breath came from Aemma Arryn, a shrill cry from the newborn babe.
And at that insignificant moment, on the day the sun was snuffed out of the sky and a roar shook stones, the Stranger decided not to pluck one of the souls in the room. It was not their time. The god turned away from the septas and the future queen consort, but his empty and black eyes focused on the newborn babe.
Saviour, he told her.
Queen, he called her.
Destroyer, he claimed her.
The Stranger stepped closer to the newborn babe and peered down at her. A pink and plump and bloody thing that let its vocal cords dance like the very things that had roared through the skies of her homeland. He laid a bone thumb on her forehead and dragged it down until it reached her lips, leaving behind a mark of pure darkness that claimed her as his. No other god could claim her, no other god would try to put their mark onto the newborn babe, because the Stranger had already claimed her moments after she was pushed from her mother's body.
The newborn princess, Rhaenerys Targaryen, belonged to the Stranger. And to he, she would return in the oncoming years when war would ravage the land.
