Chapter 35

You had been sitting on the couch in Thrawn's quarters for about an hour diligently working on reading through all the files about all rebel activities on and around the planet known as Lothal. You had individual files for each known rebel operating there as well. You noticed one or two of their names cropping up in reference to some other planets and situations that had at first been labeled as raids, like some sort of pirate activity, but you've come to the conclusion that they should be labeled as "attacks" instead. All the information together is very indicative of a larger rebel movement that has some sort of leadership, funding, and larger scale plan.

"Thrawn?" You ask, without looking up from your datapad.

"Hmm?" You saw him look at you out of the corner of your eye from across the room. He was sitting in a lounge chair. Leaned back, sprawled out a bit, and looking rather comfy, and quite like a handsome villain seated on a throne. He was just missing a crown. You killed that line of thinking before you hurt yourself.

"You and the Seventh Fleet aren't being called in just to help squash a tiny rebel group," You looked up to meet his eyes, "Are you." You said as more of a statement than a question. You tried to gauge his reaction. Obviously you weren't able to read much of anything from him.

"No. We are not." He replied steadily. "You have realized something?"

"If this 'situation'," You emphasized the word with a nod to the datapad on your lap, "Isn't taken care of quickly, this could turn into a very real threat. Might already be a very real threat." you paused for a minute, simultaneously hoping you were right and not making a fool of yourself, and hoping you were wrong and that this rebel situation wasn't as serious and you have just realized it probably is. "If there isn't already a larger rebel coalition, there very soon will be."

And there it was. You had said the words out loud and they sat there in the silence of Thrawn's living quarters with only the faint vibration of a large ship traveling through hyperspace as the backdrop.

Thrawn seemed to consider your words for a moment before responding. "You have reached the same conclusion as myself and a few others. Though I believe the larger part of the Emperor's military to be in denial of that fact. If decisive action is not taken now, before this becomes a larger threat, I believe that we will find ourselves in open war."

You tried to mask your shakey intake of breath with a question. "What are you going to do about it?"

He replied immediatly, very solemn, "What would you do about it,.. Your highness?" His word were laced with something akin to reproach. Emotion that he clearly was displaying on purpose.

Thrawn was testing you. Reminding you that you might very well be the one making these decisions some day. You could not rely on those around you to make all the decisions. You would be powerful someday. You could be, and should be, powerful and influential now. You must learn how to, and begin to make the choices for your Empire. You can't sit on a throne if you don't protect it. It will be taken from you before you knew it was even happening.

Your spine stiffened and you felt your face heat up, anger suddenly surging through your blood. He had implied so much with just the use of your title. You were playing at being a princess. And he was calling you on it. The ass was too damn observant for his own good. You werent taking your new life as seriously as he thought you should, and somehow he felt the right to call you on it as if you were doing somthing wrong.

You could have sworn your eyes flashed as you glared back at him and abruptly stood up. The emotions in your chest making it uncomfortable to remain sitting. You spoke slowly, almost sneering. The voice emerging from you almost sounding completly foreign. "What is it you think you know about me that gives you the right to judge me?"

Thrawn cocked an eyebrow up at you. "I don't need to know anything about you to see that you are a pawn. They will use you..." He paused, waiting to see if you would calm down enough to respond. You didn't. "They will use you, and take everything from you that you have just been given."

You were so angry you almost couldn't form words. You stuttered, "Pawn?! G-given?! How dare-!"

Thrawn finaly stood up to meet you. You no longer towered over him but he over you. His sudden movement cut you off. Your years of living on the street, and the habit of fear that has instilled into you making you go silent. Your voice growing smaller.

"I am a princess." You said. Trying to sound powerful and incontrol but sounding shaky, scared, and somehow spoiled instead. "You will not speak-."

This time Thrawn cut you off with his words instead. "You say you are a princess. But you don't act like one." He kept going, not giving you time to even try to respond. "You act like you know everything will be ripped away, and so have chosen not to care about it at all. As far as you are concerned you are just along for the ride, so long as it lasts."

"You have no idea what you are talking about." You bit out at him.

"Don't I?" His voice took on a dangerous note, and you inadvertently took a step backwards, and hit the edge of the couch. "You told me yourself that 'for years you never had anything. Everything you owned you could fit into a few pockets'. You don't think like an heir to an empire. You do not seem to care to fight to protect anything except your own life. When the lives of an entire galaxy might one day rest on your shoulders."

You were so angry your hands started to shake, but deep down inside you knew that you were only angry with him because he was right. You werent ready to face the truth yet, and so turned on your heel and stormed out of Thrawn's quarters.
