How did we get here?
Jake had asked to stay the night. He'd stayed over plenty of times during your friendship. It's not like he hasn't seen you at your most vulnerable state and you the same for him. There had been times though where he seemed to be just a little too affectionate. Times where he'd grab your hips and stand behind you looking over your shoulder at what you were making in the kitchen. Times where he'd get within kissing distance to your face during a disagreement to prove he wasn't backing down. Times where he'd let you lay against him during a movie with his arm wrapped around your shoulder.
Everything seemed so casual with him. In your mind, he was just being physical to show he cares. Like a reassurance he's there. He does it with all of his friends, you'd convinced yourself. His brother Josh was definitely a touchy guy so maybe Jake was just more subtle about it. Except when you think about it for too long, you realize you hadn't seen his hands on another's hips, or his arms wrapped around another. Even when he was casually dating someone, he didn't show affection around you.
"Helloooo, Y/N!" He snapped you from your deep thinking waving his hand in front of your eyes. "You good?" You nod in response and head to the kitchen, flipping the lights on the way. "Hey, do you want to try this bottle with me?" You show him the dark green bottle with the cute label you got from the grocery store. Knowing very little about wine, you bought it only because the label was pretty with gold flake laced into the image. He nods at you with an interested eyebrow raise as he heads to the couch. Sitting back and flipping it to Netflix. You grab a couple glasses from the cabinet and start to pour the pale golden liquid. Filling them a little more than halfway as you know you'd hate to interrupt the movie, or more likely the cuddling, to get a refill.
You join him on the couch and hand him his glass. "Have you ever seen this one? It's starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams." He stops on a movie with a couple. The woman was sitting in the man's lap leaned against a brick wall as they kissed. "Blue Valentine? No, I don't think so." You reply then taking a sip from your glass. Your eyes glanced over at him to see if he was really thinking about watching it. Most of the movies he picked were involving some kind of weapon and a disturbing back story, so this came as a surprise when you see him contemplating. He began to read the description aloud to you. "Hm, okay. Interesting choice."
He glances at you with a smirk knowing this would be a movie you'd pick to watch by yourself just so you can feel everything and not have to worry about hiding your giggling at a funny scene or the snot dripping from your nose as you cry at the sad parts. He clicked the play button and took a sip from his glass. Leaning back with his left arm resting on the back of the couch. You took this as an invitation to cuddle up into him. This time though, this time was different. He didn't just rest his arm on the couch. He wrapped his hand onto your shoulder and held you closer to him. His thumb began to swipe across the fabric of your sleeve.
As the movie played you realized how real and raw the emotions of the couple were affecting you. Your past relationships hadn't been the best. Every time it seemed everything was okay, then they would break things off without an answer. Or the answer was simply a stupid excuse to keep from hurting your feelings. Those always hurt the most. Jake was always there to comfort you at the end. He'd come over and just listen while you sob about how everything was just fine, then next thing you knew it was all over. The way he could read you like a book. He noticed you taking a sip every time the couple had a petty argument. Occasionally he'd glance down to you just to make sure you weren't too emotionally invested. The thought of you shedding a tear in his arms broke his heart.
For the most of the movie, it just seemed to be a story of a couple and their hardships of marriage. Each flashback had significance to their lives together and how it would change the watcher's idea on things. Everything was fine, that is until the shower scene. The wife was in the shower, dark blue backlights setting the intimate mood. The husband took his clothes off and joined her below the running water. He got onto his knees and placed his hand on the back of her thigh, grabbing gently below her ass. Jake's thumb became still as his hand lay gripped onto your skin. Somewhere through his rubbing against the sleeve of your t-shirt, it had become exposed.
