HELEN GODFREY WAS A woman with the world at her feet and the devil's right-hand-man on her arm. In the years she'd spent away from Birmingham, she had created an unshakeable image for herself. The powerful wife of Patrick Godfrey, who shook hands on the daily with the infamous Alfie Solomons, business that would keep the blood money coming. She had everything and more a woman could possibly want ― a nice big house to get lost in; a husband who ― in spite of his secrets and his shadows ― was kind and cared about her; a son and another baby on the way, a family to love in the absence of her own.

And yet, she would never be truly satisfied.

Returning to Small Heath wasn't part of the plan. Looking back only made the ache worse. But Patrick's cousin was getting married, and the groom was someone who haunted the smoke and fog of Helen's dreams. Brick-by-brick, she had created her empire, smothering down old woes where her heart couldn't follow. But in a matter of seconds, a deliberate clash of eyes across a church as wedding bells rang, everything came tumbling down.

Helen Godfrey had always been in control. She grieved then got the job done, saved her tears for behind closed doors. But wherever Tommy Shelby was concerned, she was entirely defenceless ― a puppet on a string, a body to keep him warm, a reliable heart to use when his wife died.

And maybe she was okay with that.

Maybe she never stopped loving him, not really.

Maybe she got what was coming to her.
