HELEN SHELBY HAD NEVER felt more alone. God once made everything out of nothing, but even then the nothingness showed through. Creeping through the cracks of Helen's picture-perfect life, forever a reminder that God's plan for her was a tumultuous one. Her latest path of life was isolating. Again. Helen wished for a second of peace.
At thirty-five, things had panned out much different than she expected. At present, she had nearly everything she could've possibly desired, to a point it was almost ludicrous. What Helen wanted, Tommy made sure to give her. The grand wedding — minus most of their core guests, considering they were in prison — Arrow House to shape into her own. Another baby. The love they both always wanted from each other. It was right there for the taking, so sweet that it was tooth-rotting.
And on a surface level, Helen was happy. She smiled with little effort. Ran her house like a well-oiled machine. She took James to school during the day, doted on Charlie and Florence with every given opportunity. But little Ruby Shelby was different to her other babies. When her piercing blue eyes first settled on Helen after another agonising birthing experience only eleven months after the last, something in Helen hollowed and rotted.
She didn't have a name for what had taken over her. But something wasn't right. Ruby was the first baby that was both Helen and Tommy's, and yet a very sinister part of Helen's brain drowned in regret over her. She was tired and frustrated with the endless turmoil that punished her heart and mind, guilty and paying the price for it. Helen wanted more just as much as she longed to disappear into the dark haze of nothingness. To put a stop to everything.
And then came the Black Hand, and disappearing was no longer an option.
