chapter three

"Hemlockshade!"

Sun shun through the thickets and brambles of the den, through the lichen. The black oriental groaned and faced the opposite way from where the sun was shining. He was tired. Too tired to do anything. Suddenly, he felt a jab at his ribs which made him yelp in pain. He shot up and got face-to-face to the one who jabbed him. His fur settled as he realized it was Tansycloud. He laid back down and rested his eyes. "What?" he moaned, covering his eyes with his paws.

Tansycloud rolled her eyes and, with both paws, shoved him as hard as she could. "Get up! Leopardspring is putting you and I on a patrol with some others. I think we're going to Valon Woods."

Hemlockshade uncovered his eyes, but the sunlight made him squint as he stared at the molly. It was rare for him to be put on a hunting patrol to be sure nothing happens to the she-cats as they hunt. He was lanky and slim, so he didn't go on patrols a whole lot. There were cats with more muscle in the village that could do a lot more protecting than he could. What changed Leopardspring's mind? The oriental rose to his paws and gave Tansycloud a look. "When are we leaving?" he yawned as he gave his pelt a few licks so he looked somewhat presentable.

"In a few minutes. Gingerflower is coming and I'm bringing Sagepaw. My novice is probably sleeping, so I'll go get her." Without another word, the she-cat turned and bounded out of Hemlockshade's den, going to Sagepaw and her family's den. Groaning, Hemlockshade gave his pelt a few more licks and stretched out all four limbs, parting his mouth into a wide yawn.

   I wonder where Woollysheep is.

Hemlockshade padded out of his den, glancing around the village camp. His eyes scanned for his mate, but he was no where to be seen. Disappointment settled upon the oriental. His heart ached to be with him. To bury his muzzle into his chest and breath his scent. His claws dug into the soil beneath him. The two had had a fight about half a moon ago; a horrible one. Tansycloud and him had been hanging out more often because he couldn't stand the tension between him and Woollysheep, and she understood him more. Woollysheep lashed out against him and, well, he earned a scratch on the cheek.

The tomcat waited near the exit of the village camp, his mind wondering with all sorts of thoughts. They would drift to Tansycloud, then Woollysheep, then back to his encounter with Timberfall and Fernwisp. His mind began to think back to how he ended up here in the first place when he was only a kit. Shuddering, Hemlockshade shook his thoughts away and noticed Leaftumble — a ginger-and-white tomcat — make his way over to him as Tansycloud, Gingerflower, and Sagepaw followed. His eyes focused on Tansycloud, not leaving her figure. He blinked and glanced away.
