Considering the picture Kao left him with, when Up swings the front door open twenty minutes later, he expects to be shoved against the wall with a tongue in his mouth, but—to his disappointment—Kao hangs his jacket in the foyer, looks somewhere over Up's shoulder, and coos, "Hey, baby!"
Up whips around, only to see Mayo finishing his bowl of food, and he's enraged that Kao thinks to greet his cat before him . Sour mood putting on a bitter edge, he wastes no time and drags himself to the living room, where he sits down on the couch with his bottom lip jutted out childishly.
Kao's footsteps echo against the floor, until the moment he stops by the kitchen counter to pet Mayo, telling him to have a good meal, telling him that he's glowing, telling him that he's the cutest baby in the world.
While Up is right there, barely five meters away, waiting.
And the worst thing is that Kao doesn't even notice his bitterness; when he finally joins Up on the couch, long moment later, he only asks what Up is watching on the television and throws his arm to the back of the couch.
Up shushes him like he gives a damn about what's happening on the screen—or knows, in the first place—and Kao only laughs, pushing himself closer against Up's side and swinging both his legs over Up's lap.
Okay. This kind of makes Up melt, but, although his hands do wander to Kao's thighs to hold them in place, he doesn't say anything out loud, insistently pretending he's immersed in the plot of this mediocre action movie.
"You seem tense," Kao says suddenly, chin hooked over Up's shoulder to stare at him; Up doesn't turn his head to the side because of the sheer proximity—they would simply kiss. "Are you sure you're okay?"
Up thought he didn't notice. But this is Kao—the soul who doesn't know him half as much time as Up's other friends do, and yet understands him better than any of them, wordlessly.
"Yeah," Up breathes out, because he is okay. He leans his temple against Kao's forehead, squirming when Kao nuzzles his nose against his cheek. "Just had a rough day at the studio."
"Okay. Wanna talk about it?"
Up shakes his head. There's nothing to talk about.
"Okay," Kao repeats, voice gentle like always. He moves back, rolling up the sleeves of his hoodie, and pats the space between them on the couch. "Lie down for me, hm? I'll give you a massage."
Mildly surprised, Up raises his brows, but he obediently lies down on his belly, cheek resting on his laced hands. He stares at Kao out of the corner of his eye and clumsily pulls up his t-shirt when Kao asks him to.
