Two siblings will meet such a person in a dark October night, acting mysterious and completely innocent and all this before Halloween.

Amanda and Larry are living with their parents in a small village of Stowe in Vermont. Those two love Halloween, this is the only night, were they can be themselves for once.

Their parents received a job in Vermont, which means that they had to move away from their hometown in Buffalo. For the two was everything new, all they have is each other. Especially at school was it the worst. Bullies are on to Larry and for Amanda, a group of girls took her as a target. Even though Larry is 12 and Amanda 10, it made no difference to them; all they wanted is to go back home. They want to be with their friends, in their old house in Buffalo, celebrating the event together. Their mother Carry realized how hard it is for them, seeing their long faces day in day out. She decided to make a special night for them. Normally, she comes into their rooms and tells them all sorts of stories before bedtime. Her husband Morris, finds it childish to tell fairytale at their age, but for the time being, he ignores it.

Carry makes them some hot chocolate with two pieces of marshmallows, a special treat they don't get too often. On a tray, she went into Larry's room, where Amanda stayed for the night as well, on the guest bed. Climbing under the bedsheets, she cuddles up to her children, "Did you know, that the forest has many creatures that we cannot see?" Amanda's eyes widened with interest, "Really?" Her mother nodded, "And when the sun goes down, they will show themselves to those who want to see them...to those who believe." "That is rubbish!" said Larry, placing his empty cup on the tray, "Such creatures don't exist."

"Yes they do" protested Amanda.

"Did you ever see one before?!"

"I...saw...a shadow!"

Larry rolled his eyes, "That was your own shadow stupid."

"Don't call me stupid."

"...stupid."

"Maaaaaammmmm!!!!"

"Enough!" she yelled out, feeling a headache coming up, "Larry, since when do you think they don't exist anymore? I thought you loved the creatures of the night."

"The boys in school laughed at me when I said, that the boogie man will get them."

Amanda laughed evil, pointing at her brother, "You are so stupid!"

"Shut it, pinky pie!"

"That is enough Amanda, Larry! I don't want to hear another thing tonight or I let your father deal with you. So good night, sweet dreams." Before she could leave the room, her daughter yelled over,"But what about our bedtime story?"

Carry held the door for a second, her eyes had to fight to stay open, "I have no stories for you tonight." "But..." Quickly, the door was shut. Larry slowly moved to his sister, whispering into her ear, "I hope the boogie man will get you."

Amanda starts to cry, hitting her brother, "Leave me alone Larry!"

From downstairs, they heard their father yell, "Keep quiet!"

"You are such a crybaby" he said, turning his back to her and crawled under his bed sheet. Larry had no problems to fall asleep in seconds, unlike Amanda. Her eyes are wide open, looking in every direction. Fear creped up to the heart, making it beat fast, impossible for her to sleep now. Normally, she doesn't need anything to sleep with, but this time...her teddy gave her the only safety for the dark night. This habit happened, ever since they moved to Vermont.

On that very night, Morris had to go to work. His night shifts were draining his health, making him look like a zombie. Thin, pale and doesn't seem the need to shave anymore. As always, he grabbed his lunch box from his wife. "Thank you dear." "Please be careful Morris. Since you took the nightshift, you seem to have grown weaker...just look at you." He took his time to take a look in the mirror...and shrugged, "I see no difference. I will be home a six." She stopped him once more, handing him a picture, "Amanda drew that for you. Take it with you honey." Morris knows how worried his wife can be, so he folded the piece of paper and placed it into his box. With one last kiss on the lips, he left the house. Carry watched from the window, as he drove off into the night. "Come back soon" she begged, fearing the worst for her husband. Back in Buffalo, her husband wasn't like that at all. He was full of life; he even took a few days off for his children. But now, he does one shift after another, just to afford this house. It was still a mystery to Carry of why he took such a large house. A flat would have been fine, but no...he wanted the best for his family. She accepted his decision and still, hopes that it will be the same again...like the good old days.

Morris took his usual strong coffee from the petrol station, heading towards his workplace. As a security guard, he has to run around and check the buildings his boss has assigned him to. As much as he loves his wife, he can't stand her sense of healthy food. He sighed, opening the lunch box. Another sandwich with cheese, followed with carrots and cucumber as snacks. "I need something more...juicy" he mumbled, driving a lot faster now. If he gets there in ten minutes, he could get his food at the local steakhouse. In the middle of the road, he tossed the food out the window. For a second he didn't pay any attention what lies before him, as something hit his car. The impact made him push the brakes, throwing this thing off the windshield.

Tired as he was, he needed a second longer, to realize what just happened. First thought was, that he had caught a deer. Out off the car, he inspected the damage. To his surprise, the figure was gone, but the scratches on the car were proof that something collided with it. With a flash light, he checked his surroundings, in case this thing was seriously injured. Not a trace was to be found, although, a vibration from his jacket made him jump.

"Morris here!"

His boss was yelling into the device, "Where the hell are you?!"
"I am on my way Sir!" He clapped the phone shut, jumped into his car and left the scene.

Somewhere in the bushes, appeared something large, a spider like creature, heading back to the street. It was sniffing for the items Morris had thrown out the window. In the middle of the vegetables was the picture of Amanda. The creature inspected the drawing with interest, while nibbling on the carrot sticks. Once finished with the meal, it grabbed the box and picture and went back into the woods.
