Marvin inhaled silently, listening closely to the story. As it wrapped up, Ollie waited. For reprimanding, for a nervous breakdown, anything.
"So let me get this straight; you created two characters because you wanted to make a video about having a girlfriend?"
Dejected, Ollie nodded. "It was stupid, I know."
Marvin shrugged. "Well, that's how most egos are created. To star in stupid YouTube videos. I was created to test out a kit to teach you how to do magic."
Ollie held back a chuckle.
"Yeah, not something I wanna be known for. That's why I have my business."
Ollie leaned his head on the window, watching the world fly by. "Good for you, Mr. McGarry."
Marvin sighed. He's not gonna convince that kid to call him Marvin.
Someone honked at the vehicle they were driving in. "Watch it, asswipe!" The perp shouted.
DadPat looked at him sullenly. "Poor guy. Probably had a rough childhood. He should see a therapist."
Ollie once again held back a snicker.
"You guys drinking enough water back there?"
Marvin held up his almost-empty bottle. "Yep."
"Ollie, you drinking water?"
"I ran out."
"Okay, just hold on until we get home. I don't want you to get dehydrated."
Ollie nodded, still not sure how to respond to the ego with his father's face. Marvin understood how he felt to a lesser degree. Matthew was his friend; but he was Ollie's father. Priorities.
Finally, they pulled in to the House of Patrick. DadPat parked the car and Ollie unbuckled and jumped out. At the door was Ms. Patrick. Marvin greeted her pleasantly when he walked up to the front door. "Stephanie."
"Hello Marvin." She responded. She hugged her son and ushered Marvin inside. Marvin tentatively stepped inside. No burning or stabbing on the clavicle. Good sign so far.
Marvin waited at the door for DadPat to walk in before shutting the door. For good measure, he locked it as well.
"Have a seat, please," Steph said, motioning to the chairs in the dining room.
Marvin nodded and sat, patiently waiting.
"Would you like anything to drink, Mr. McGarry?"
Marvin shook his head. "Listen, kid," he started. "I hate to be the one to give you this talk, but you know how dangerous it is to have a mark in this world, right?"
Ollie nodded.
"You make sure you keep that covered up. Luckily, you have your mark in a spot that can easily be covered, so the only problem is stay away from pools and beaches."
Ollie cocked his head. "Huh? Wh-why?"
"M'kay, let me rephrase that; don't go anywhere shirtless. If the wrong person sees that, you will be hunted. And you will be hurt."
Ollie looked down as Marvin stood up. Steph went to intercept him. "Where are you going?"
"Back home," Marvin told them. "You're not safe if I stay." He turned to Ollie and bluntly continued, "Getting that mark is going to be the worst thing you've ever done in your life."
And with that, he walked out and disappeared into the night. Ollie looked around and called out. "Mr. McGarry?"
No response.
"Mr. McGarry!"
"He's gone, Ollie," Steph told him. "Now, come on. Don't wanna catch a cold."
Ollie reluctantly obeyed, but not before looking one last time for the Magnificent Marvin McGarry...to no avail.
