A blood curling scream woke Tanora next morning. It took her a moment to orient herself. She was in her usual room but why was Cove blinking sleepily next to her? It came to her that after all the talking they did yesterday evening (or was it today morning?) Shayla and Rane took a room and Cove and herself the other. But that wasn't important.
The scream echoed through the rooms again and this time Tanora jumped out of the bed, Cove still half asleep, and ran out of the room. The screeches had come from the left of them, in direction of Rane's bedroom.
What she saw was worse than her worst nightmare. Shayla was standing pressed against the window, as white as if she had seen a ghost. Parts of her beige pajamas were soaked with red. Splotches of red lay strewn across the white and black floor. The bed was a mess of red sheets. And in the middle of all that red, Rane's lifeless body.
Rane.
Her best friend
Her companion through everything.
Her brother.
The world tilted or maybe Tanora tilted. But nobody was there to catch her.
