The future is not something you want to look forward to. Listen, Stay in the dark about your life if you know anything about your family secrets. Don't go searching for the truth, stay in the dark and avoid being in my situation. I had been abandoned by my mother and father by the age of four, I survived off of a peach farm in the woods. At the early age of eleven I already knew how to hotwire a car and catch fireflies for lanterns. I was alone and had no clue what to do with my life. I climbed a peach tree using the lower branch to hoist myself onto another grabbing a few peaches dropping them onto the ground. I slipped on the branches and fell backwards, scraping my hand. I looked down at it, I should find somewhere to steal some bandages. Or at least try to. I scanned the forest seeing the dim light of a flame, a camp? I got up shakely and stretched, it didn't seem too far away I could walk. I tied my hair into a small ponytail and started to walk. I should've realized how long it would take me to get to the source flame. I heard a crack behind me and spun around looking for the source, I saw a figure moving in the darkness. I swallowed and stumbled back holding up a stick in defense, a low laugh came out of the forest. I should've waited till sunrise. It would've at least given me an advantage. Out of the shadows came a large beast with one eye and an evil toothy grin. I dropped the stick and started sprinting towards the light. My breathing quickened and my heart rate doubled in the course of seconds, I tried to think of any type of explanation. I wanted to wake up under the tree, I was alone and had no one to help me. I kept running a bit further.
"Please help!" I called running faster "Somebody!" The monster laughed as I fell onto the ground dirt staining my shirt.
"Sorry squirt, I'll make this painless." He bent down to pick me up like I was a small animal "It nothing personal, can't have you talking." He explained. When a blade went through its chest cutting him in half. The beast turned into dust and disappeared. My savor was a boy at least four years older than me with blonde hair and a strange scar on his eye. The orange t-shirt he wore was labeled C-H-B with a winged horse.
"You alright?" He asked looking down at me. I swallowed and shuffling back a bit "Hey I won't hurt ya". I got up before stumbling onto the ground again. The boy picked me up and chuckled
"Thanks." I muttered he smiled and shrugged
"Don't mention it, let's get you to camp." The boy carried me to a strange camp set up like something out of a movie. Large cabins out of marble, wood or metal dotted the landscape, many of the other kids looked at me confused as he took me to a man. He was middle aged in a wheel chair,
"Hello there little one." He smiled rolling over to me "What might your name be?" He motioned for me to show him my cut hand. I held it out seeing the dried blood but no cut.
"Rachel Freyna, where am I?" I asked, the man examined my hand then let go and smiled.
"You are at camp half blood, I'm Chiron." Chiron said before talking about gods and their children. I looked over to a pit in the ground that looked like a fire pit though the fire had seemingly gone out. I walked away from him and knelt down near the fire poking it with a stick, it only took moments for it to light back up. I smiled
"That's better." I muttered, warming up my hands a bit. It was slightly colder than a normal November day. But nothing today was like a normal day. Chiron rolled over to me and put a hand on my shoulder
"Rachel, you can stay here with us if you wish. Until you're claimed." Chiron offered, I looked up and nodded.
"That sounds nice." Chiron waved over the boy from before he smiled and looked at me.
"This will be your councilor till then, Rachel, this is Luke Castellan son of Hermes." Chiron introduced. Chiron looked towards the direction and came out of his wheelchair revealing his horse body. I blinked and rubbed my eyes
"You'll get used to the weird stuff." Luke assured, walking us away from Chiron and the fire pit. Luke stopped and took a leaf out of my hair, "So know anything about your parents?" He asked I shrugged
"I vaguely remember my mom, but my dad is just blank." I explained before crossing my arms. I had gone twelve full years without any type of memory of my father holding onto one of my mother. Luke grimaced and put a hand on my shoulder
"The gods are busy." He started "They have a lot of kids and they don't always care." He ruffled my hair and smiled "But if you're one of the lucky ones, they'll send a sign showing you their own." I sighed and looked up at a large cabin. Luke patted my back "But until then you're staying in the reject cabin." I chuckled as he opened the door showing me to a bunk. Luke tossed me a orange shirt same as his with short sleeves instead of none at all. I shivered at the open window, Luke shut it then shuffled through a large box finding a leather jacket it was giant on me but it kept me warm. Luke smiled as I looked around the cabin,
"Am I allowed to leave and wonder around?" Luke chuckled and ran his hand through his hair.
"Totally, dinner is soon so I'll find you when it happens." Luke explained before going out the door. I looked down at the clean shirt, I changed into the shirt throwing my black shirt under the pillow. I got up and walked over to the door and reached for it when a pair of hands pulled me out of the way. A pair of twins with curly brown hair smiled,
"Careful there squirt." the first one laughed pointing up at a bucket of water "we just finished setting it up." I chuckled. The twins went out a window helping me out as well,
"I'm Connor thats Travis." Connor said pointing to his twins, "You're the new girl huh." he smiled looking down at me examining me. I nodded
"Rachel, I'm Rachel." Travis nodded and shivered looking over at the campfire where a group of kids sat. A girl with light blonde hair sat with a stick drawing in the dirt, Travis chuckled and rubbed his hands.
"Hey Crystal!" they called making the girl stand up and walk over to us, the two snickered "Eric's back." Travis said pointing to the door. The girl ran into Hermes cabin before being covered in water and yelped turning to Travis and Connor with a murderous look on her face.
"Bad idea?" I asked, they shrugged
"Maybe." the girl walked over and hit the two of them in the head before putting her hands on her hips.
"You two are going to be the death of me." Crystal muttered before looking at me. Travis chuckled and smiled
"Rach, this is Crystal daughter of Kione." she looked at me and squated to look me in the eye.
"Nice to meet you." Crystal smiled, she wore a tank top though it was freezing but I had a feeling it would make sense. Crystal opened her hand and a snowball appeared in her hand tossing it at Connor.
"Now you two are going to train with Lexi and Carter tomorrow understood?" he asked, I swallowed at the idea of training. Travis and Connor rushed away leaving me with the snow girl. Crystal back at the campfire,
"You must be cold, come on." she ushered me to the fire as I sat down next to a boy with blonde hair and freckles. Crystal smiled picking up the stick again continuing her drawing "Thats Will, Selena and Lee." she motioned to the brown haired girl painting her nails holding them up to the cold wind. Then the blonde boy next to me and Will.
"Hello, I'm Rachel." Will looked at me and hugged me throwing my guard out the window. A horn made me sit up right,
"Move aside half-dorks." a boy announced pushing Lee out of his chair "You too half pint." I glared at the guy. He was about six feet with muscles like a wrestler which made my stomach turn at the memory of some thugs I encountered.
"No. Shove off." I stated, he looked at me and chuckled shaking his head and shook her head
"I'm a son of Nike you might want to listen to me." I crossed my arms standing on the chair to look him in the eye, before shoving Will. My sharp orange gaze tried to scare him off, it did not work. I grabbed a bow from Lee's back and an arrow aiming it at his chest.
"No, you'll leave us alone." I stated, Crystal didn't say anything just watched me. The guy swallowed
"You don't have the guts." I got ready to let go when Crystal tapped my shoulder and pointed up. Above my head was a golden harp that glowed with yellow light. I blinked and turned to Crystal
"Whats that?" I asked before it faded away. Crystal shook her head
"Trick of the light probably, lets get to dinner. Leave Ben with his braincell." she said heaving me over her shoulder heading to the dining hall. I squirmed around trying to get her to put me down as we approached Hermes table.
"Crystal mind putting Rachel down?" Luke asked, she muttered something and placed me on the bench patting my head before sitting down alone at a table. Luke slid me a plate with some questionable chicken on it and smiled.
"So how are you liking camp?" he asked, I sighed
"It's never quiet." I commented, Luke laughed and nodded in agreement poking at his chicken. I took a bite and swallowed a chunk and it felt like it was stuck in my throat as I coughed up something.
"Hey you alright?" Luke asked leaning forward a bit, I coughed more but orange smoke emerged from my lungs, I felt like something was overtaking my body. My voice urged me to speak but I didn't know what to say
"A child of harp and flame with call their allies from the same, hatred for gods above with soon give a mighty shove. Falls far beyond the grasp and only her torch will light the path." I spoke, I didn't know what I was saying, it seemed like someone was feeding me words. The words kept coming "A path covered with frost and ice to the door of death guided by mice. Flames are frosted burning through, but only then will it be new." I finished and looked up the same symbol from before glowed brighter over my head as the smoke slowly cleared from the dining pavilion. Everyone froze and looked at me as Chiron stood and cleared his throat.
"Please welcome Rachel Freyna daughter of Apollo." he announced as he motioned to me.
"Who?" I questioned, around my throat a necklace formed with a yellow bead at the center. Apollo? I had no clue who he was but I didn't realize how bad the situation was until I was brought to long house to talk with Chiron and a man named Mr.D. I sat down on the ground playing with the string around my neck as Chiron looked at Mr.D for a starting conversation.
"Do you know what happened?" he asked, I shook my head and apologized my entire stanced loosening as the feeling of disappointment turned in my gut.
"No, I just kept talking." he nodded and sighed "Please explain what happening to me." I asked. Chiron shook his head and looked over out the window.
"I'm afraid we aren't sure, it might be possible that you are possessed by an oracle but that shouldn't be possible unless they met you." I didn't remember meeting anyone being like they you seem nice have this smoke. Mr.D grimaced and opened another coke can
"The fact is you might be an oracle, the ability the speak the future is now your problem." I looked down at my hands and got up keeping a grip on the sleeves of the jacket.
"For now go to cabin 7, and rest." I nodded and went out the door walking along the cabins finding Will and Lee waiting outside the cabin. Will held the door open for me, his freckles like small constellations on his face.
"Looks like we got a little sister now Will," Lee said laughing and picking me up as if to throw me into the air. Lee walked in a circle holding me up to the other kids to show the new comer. They weren't threatening, just very energetic, I laughed as he started tossing me up and down. Lee put me down next to a boy about my age with dark skin and cornrows, I smiled and put an arm around him
"I'm Rachel, what about you?" I asked.
"I'm Austin." Austin said as Will smiled and patted me on the head. Apollo cabin was very loud and filled with life, but I was clueless of my father's powers and godly claims. Will brought me a book, Apollo was the god of music, poetry, the sun, healing and prophecy.Who had a tendacy to kill of his partners both male and female. My siblings were very open and excited to have a newcomer, music quickly filled the cabin as instruments were played songs were sung a few danced and cheered as a bag of marshmallows was pasted around. I sat on my bunk with Will as the evening slowly quieted down.
"I hope you like it here, Apollo doesn't have powers like Posiden or Demeter but it's fun." I yawned and rested my head on the pillow as he got up turning off the lights.
"Seems like it will." I muttered before shutting my eyes and letting the days events sink in, I relaxed and drifted off to sleep.
