The next morning, when Ben opened his eyes and tried to move a leg, he felt a very painful tension in his muscles. His animated night with Farah had left him with a few body aches.
He placed his hand on the forehead of his sleeping companion to check her temperature: she was burning up.
Panicking, he rushed to the little pot of ointment hoping it would fight the infection more, but it was almost empty.
Instead of going straight to the secret cabinet in his office, he cooked breakfast so she wouldn't wake up alone. Eggs, bacon, pancakes with marmalade, bread, fruit yoghurt and green tea. He arranged everything on a tray and brought it to bed.
Luckily, his beloved fairy had just woken up, but her complexion was pale with a feverish glance. Her eyes were bloodshot, which alarmed the botany teacher."How are you feeling, sweetie?" he inquired, placing his hand on hers after joining her in bed, concerned.
"I'm not very hungry this morning, and I'm a bit cold," she admitted, moving closer to him. "I'm also feeling some muscle pain."
"Your forehead is on fire with fever, I should have let you sleep, instead of cuddling, I'm sorry," he apologised and poured her a cup of steaming tea.
"No, we did the right thing, I don't regret our night at all," she protested, forcing herself to swallow her fried egg. "What happened between you and me, I've wanted for a long time, I'm glad, even if I have aches and pains. I've had the best night I've ever had and I thank you for it."
She shivered as she thought of her skin vibrating under the caresses and kisses of her lover. He had been unimaginably caring.
He leaned in to kiss her, before noticing that her arm seemed to swell on the injury site.
Indeed, as he carefully removed the bandage, he became aware of the extent of the damage. Now, in addition to the inflammation, the wound had turned a dark purple and was oozing."Don't move from the bed, I'll get some ointment from my office," he warned her, looking serious. "I don't want to find you on the floor unconscious."
While she was reluctantly continuing to munch on her breakfast, he stood up, grabbed his bag, and left the suite. He walked briskly towards his office, hoping not to run into anyone at this hour. He managed to reach the room without being seen and, once the door was closed, he rummaged through his cabinet. He took the entire supply of Zanbaq before looking around the room. Everything was as it had been before, the mop had dried, and it was a good thing his anti-haemoglobin potion had been effective, because the police would sooner or later come and search his office.
He hurried out and up towards the staff suites but ran into Andreas, who was coming down the stairs. The botanist suddenly froze, expecting anything but to meet him."I thought you had a stomach flu," the Specialist scoffed with a sarcastic grin. "You don't really seem that sick. Is there anything else you're not telling me?"
His enemy stared viciously into his eyes without breaking stride.
"I'm much better this morning, but yesterday and the night before, it was complicated, no way to work, I had to stay in bed," he replied in an icy tone.
Sky's father moved a little closer, looking petty.
"Say you harmed Rosalind's life and didn't want to deal with the cops," he muttered. "I didn't think you were that smart and crafty, I am pleasantly surprised."
Ben tried to remain impassive to his accusations so as not to give himself away.
"Do you have proof?"
"I'll find them, that's for sure, and I'll get you convicted," retorted his former friend, sure of himself. "The police are on my side anyway."
"Is that a threat?"
