"Okay, guys, see you tomorrow night," Justin waved while keeping his face pointed toward the table. His expression said that he was not looking forward to it.
"See ya, bro," Eric grinned toward the rest of the group. "Hey, guys, you want to come over? We could make a pizza and watch a movie or something."
"Yeah, that sounds... miserable," Mervin rolled his eyes. "Unless you're gonna watch Predator or something like that."
"Alien?" Eric asked as he held the front door open.
"Eh, I'll pass," Mervin shrugged.
Yu shook his head. "I have to be up early to get the food prep done for the restaurant tomorrow, so, no. Sorry."
"Amy?" Eric asked hopefully.
"I, uh..." She reached for her backpack strap and realized she had left it inside. After a moment, she mumbled, "I forgot my bag, but I gotta... I can't."
"Okay," Eric slumped his shoulders.
"I'm free tonight," Jane whispered.
"Well, I mean..." Eric stumbled over a few syllables before muttering, "If it's just us, probably not."
"Oh..." Jane stared at her shoes and touched the toes together.
Mervin looked between the two of them and then shrugged. "Eh, what the hell. It's not like I've got anything better to do."
Eric grinned and nodded toward his car. "You guys want to just ride with me, then?"
"Sure," Jane's bright expression spoke volumes louder than her voice.
"See you guys tomorrow," Amy called before turning around and knocking on the door again.
"Baby Amy," Skeeter opened the door for her and smirked from where he leaned against the frame. "What's up, girl?"
"I, uh, forgot my backpack," She swallowed hard.
"Oh, is that so?" He nodded. "What's the password?"
"Uh..." she stared at him but her mind went blank.
Skeeter pulled himself up to his full height and lowered his voice to a commanding boom, "Speak, friend, and enter!"
"Mellon," Amy stated without a second thought.
Skeeter stepped aside to let her pass.
"Thank you," Amy nodded as she strode past him.
She took a deep breath while walking down the hallway. She wanted tonight to be perfect. She wanted Justin to think she was amazing. She wanted...
Amy smacked into the door when it opened as she reached for the handle. She stumbled back while holding her nose.
"Oh, shit, are you okay, Ames?" Justin reached out and then took his hands back. "I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were coming back downstairs."
Amy pinched her nose shut before stating, "I forgot my backpack."
"Oh... sure, I, uh..." Justin stood awkwardly and then took a breath. "You want to sit down on the couch? I mean, just, well... are you bleeding?'
"I'm good," Amy straightened out and looked at her hand before wiggling her nose. There was no blood, so she figured she was fine.
"I'm really sorry," Justin let out a long breath and made a face. "This, uh... not how I wanted to start tonight."
