"Katherine!"

I groaned and grabbed my bag from the hardwood floor. "Coming!" I took a double check in the mirror and made sure my hair was fine. In the beginning of school last year, it looked dreadful. It was like a bird's nest. I was determined to make it look at least decent in the beginning of this school year.

I took in a deep breath and rushed down the carpeted staircase. I walked into the kitchen to see two of my friends being fed by my parents. I laughed and grabbed a piece of buttered toast off of Gina's plate.

"Hey! Get your own!" she complained.

I shot her a look. "This is my house!"

"Chop, chop, people, let's go!" Hailey exclaimed, waving her hand in the air and heading out the door.

My parents both gave me quick pecks on the cheek before I left with my friends. I brushed the crumbs off of my face and walked behind Gina and Hailey.

I don't know how I ended up with these two. I was just silently existing in the back of the classroom last year, and I guess they felt bad for me because I didn't really have friends. I was fine with being by myself until one day, they took me into their little group. They made me forget why I liked being alone.

"I just hope I don't get her again this year. It's so stupid!" Gina angrily yelled at the sky. "She complains about having to grade all of paperwork? Then stop assigning them! Make it easier for yourself, woman!"

After a little while more of walking, we jogged up the brick steps of our school. My ears were instantly blast by the sound of people conversing with one another.

"I have to go to my locker. We'll meet up at the usual at lunch, right?" I asked, getting ready to go my own way.

They nodded and went left as I went right. I heavily sighed as several shoulders bumped past mine. When I finally got to my locker, I put in the combination and neatly placed my books in, exchanging them for a different set. I played the human dodgeball game again, trying not to get pushed by anyone. Since I'm so tiny, people don't really acknowledge me in the hallways, which is why I fell on my butt at least four times since freshman year. You'd think that after three years, people would finally realize I'm here.

Just as I was going to walk into my Chemistry class, a hard body crashed against mine.

"Watch where you're going!" a familiar, deep voice yelled.

My books fell onto the tiled floors and I rushed to grab them. I furrowed my eyebrows and didn't even bother to see who the jerk was. I huffed and placed my books on a desk not too close to the front, but not too close to the back of the room either.

In a matter of minutes, the room was filled. It was full of noise and commotion until the teacher walked into the room.

"Get in your seats and shut up!" the bearded man yelled.

Everyone scrambled to their seats and a few people in the back snickered at the panic coming from the people who didn't know the teacher that well. It was a silent for a while before he leaned against his desk and smiled.

"Just kidding!" he sang. "I'm Mr. Vanderwood, and I'm a pretty chill guy. I want to be a good teacher, but in order for that to happen, I need you guys to be good students. We can mess around with each other, but when I tell everyone to get to work, that means you really do—" He pursed his lips together as he heard the whispering of voices in the back of the class. "Ah, Mr. Wilkinson, I have you in my class again."

Everyone turned around to look at him, but I kept doodling in my notebook.

"One more year of fun, right Randy?"

Mr. Vanderwood chuckled and walked towards the desk until he reached to the red haired girl sitting next to me. He patted on the wood. "I'm afraid I'm going to have to separate you and your companion."

"M—"

"Move now," he demanded, tapping his fingers once more and going back to his desk.

The confused girl got up and made way for the troublemaker, switching her seat for his. I looked at him from the corner of my eye and watched as he lazily slouched into the chair. I sighed and brought my finger to my temple.

Sammy Wilkinson. He was known as one of the 'bad boys' at school. Gina's talked about him a lot, mostly about how hot he apparently is, but also how much trouble he gets into. I can't believe I have to be partners with him. Knowing Mr. Vanderwood from Hailey's class last year, he likes keeping things the same, so I was pretty much stuck with some kind of school criminal.

"Your first assignment," Mr. Vanderwood started,"is a partner project."

My eyes widened.

"You and the person sitting next to you must create a presentation about how much you know about this subject and any other sciences. The minimum is ten slides, and there is no max. It's due next week, so don't procrastinate. Talk to your partner now to set dates on when to get together."

I cleared my throat and stared at the lined paper in my notebook, hoping that Sammy would ignore the instructions and go back to talking to his friend. When I turned and looked to the side, hoping that his seat would be empty, I was disappointed. He was looking at me with a crooked smirk.

"Hey, partner."
