The Afghan, one of the most glamorous breeds, has a superbly elegant and silky coat on an athletic frame, as befits a hunting creature originated in the mountains of Afghanistan.

The Afghan's expression is one of dignity and superiority, but he can have moments of hectic eccentricity, racing across the yard.

Not inclined to heed the wishes of an exasperated owner unless handled with firmness as he grows up, this is a dog that is not for the uncommitted. Treating one casually will not lead to a happy relationship in the household.

More than capable of acting as a watchdog, the Afghan may use his powerful teeth on intruders if his warnings are not heeded.

In spite of standing over 27 1/2 inches at the withers, he is not a greedy feeder, in fact he may be a little picky if allowed to have his own way. He is an athlete and needs a lot of exercise to cope with his restless energy.

The Afghan's silky coat will not look its best without constant care. It needs regular and thorough grooming, and any knots must be removed every day. The breeder from whom he is purchased will show the new owner how this is best done.

The Afghan is a dog for the true enthusiast who has the time and the patience to get the best out of a canine glamour star.
