The Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen is another of the Basset family, and even in his native France is not numerous, which is a pity as he is a kindly, intelligent dog.

He stands up to 18 inches at the withers on his tiptoes, and he is not a hefty hound. He is nimble and purposeful in his style of going and gives the impression of enjoying life to the full as long as he is given things to do. He will put his mind to all sorts of exercise that appeal to his sense of fun.

Like most of his type he enjoys his food, but he does not seem to object to being rationed to keep him trimly athletic. He has a rough coat that is basically white with lemon, orange, tricolor, or grizzle markings; underneath the top-coat he sports a thick undercoat, so he is fairly weatherproof and easy to keep clean.

A breed that deserves popularity as long as it is not inbred anymore than is inevitable with a small pool of breeding stock.
