I still remember the night I met Sam at the football game. Sam looked like a forest. I hope that doesn't sound rude. Her hair was as brown as bark on a tree and her eyes were as green as the leaves on the trees. She's so nice and very pretty. Maybe I could ask her out on a date when I learn to drive. I must've been zoned out cause I didn't remember coming to the kitchen with Sam but I just sat there and watched her get ice cream out of the freezer. She was putting the milk and ice cream in the blender as I asked where the bathroom was. She pointed around the corner almost like she's been here one too many times. While I was trying to find the door to the bathroom I accidentally walked in on Brad and Patrick kissing. I could see Brad in a panic. Patrick spoke first.
"Charlie?"
"I'm getting a milkshake from Sam."
Patrick mumbled something to Brad. I assumed he was trying to calm Brad down. Patrick closed the door as he put both hands on my shoulders.
"Charlie, you can't tell anyone about what you saw."
"Why?"
"Because Brad isn't ready."
"Why?"
"Because.. wait Charlie are you baked?"
"Like a cake."
Patrick walked me back downstairs after showing me to the bathroom.
"Now listen, Charlie. Brad isn't ready for people to know so promise to not tell anyone. Our secret okay?"
"Okay."
"Good."
Patrick left me with Sam as he went back upstairs. The milkshake Sam made me had to be one of the best milkshakes I've ever had. But I think that was just because I was high. I've never seen Patrick smile so much. But once Bob started teasing him about having a crush on the school's star quarterback he was smiling a lot. After the party, Patrick, Sam, and I were in her pickup truck but Patrick was driving this time. We approached the Fort Pitt Tunnel, as Sam eagerly asked Patrick to pull over quickly. She got into the bed of the truck as she beat against the window signaling for Patrick to drive. Sam stood up as we entered the tunnel, Patrick had a smile on his face. I'm guessing they do this all the time. Patrick played a song on full volume and the tunnel gave it a cool effect. I later learned that the song was called, "Landslide." When we got to the end of the tunnel Sam got down and we all started laughing. And at that moment I swear we were infinite.

Dear friend,
You wouldn't believe it, I have a date for the Sadie Hawkins dance! In case you don't know. It's a dance where the girl asks the guy. To my surprise the girl was Sam. I was surprised because I thought she was dating Craig but no! I was wrong.
It all happened after I was done helping Mary Elizabeth staple the latest issue of Punk Rocky on a Friday before we headed over to The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Sam was nicer than usual on that day. Not that that's a bad thing. I remember Patrick had made a coupon that advertised a free "blow job" for anyone who buys a smiley cookie from the big boy.  That night when I went to The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Mary Elizabeth was upset because Craig hadn't shown up and nobody knew why. It was such a big issue because we had nobody to play Rocky. That's when Mary Elizabeth looked at me.
"Charlie, how many times have you seen the show?"
"Ten times."
"Would you be willing to play Rocky?"
"I'm not cut or hunky."
"I don't care. Can you play him?"
"Maybe."
"Good enough."
The next thing I knew, I was wearing nothing but slippers and a gold bathing suit. I wouldn't have played Rocky if Sam hadn't told me she wanted me to play Rocky. But that's all I needed to hear apparently. I had the best time I had ever had in my whole life. The best part had to be where Janet and Rocky had to touch each other. But at the same time, it wasn't the best part. I thought if I were to touch Sam on stage and mean it, it would be cheap. I didn't want it to be cheap and I didn't want it to be Rocky and Janet. I wanted it to be Sam and I. So we just played. The show ended and we all bowed together. Patrick shoved me towards the front to take my own personal bow. It was nice to hear all the applause.
I ended up getting an erection. But not until we got to the parking lot of Big Boy. That's when Sam asked me to the Sadie Hawkins' dance. Sam said that she was proud of me and that I looked good in the bathing suit. When I got home I went up to my room and laid on my bed staring at the ceiling. It was quiet but not the bad quiet, the good kind of quiet. That made me smile.
Love always,
Charlie

Dear friend, I hope I'll never stop loving Sam. I think Sam is pretty and smarter than she seems. At the dance, I complimented Sam on how she looked. She'll truly always look beautiful to me. Sam and I danced a lot which was fun. When we stopped dancing we took a break and I learned that she wants to go to Penn State. After the dance, Sam drove me home. I looked at her before opening the truck door and getting out.
"Charlie, wait!" Sam had gotten out of the pickup truck and ran over to me. "Do you still wanna date me?" Sam asked. I could only nod. I was so surprised to hear those words come out of Sam's mouth. That's when it happened. She kissed me again! "I love you."
"I love you too."
Sam smiled and got back in her truck.
Love always,
Charlie

Dear friend,
Sam and I have been together for three weeks now. We've also been going on dates from time to time. We had a date earlier today where I drove for once. I was excited to drive but nervous about our date even though it was not our first time going on a date. That night my dad came into my room to have 'the talk' with me. He was saying things like...
"Just because I'm your dad doesn't mean you can't talk to me..."
"Wear protection."
"No always means no. Or else you'll be in big trouble."
He finally left my room after that. I think he's just happy I'm not gay. This is kinda weird but I guess it's good for him. Besides that, on the date we went to Big Boys and then drove around town while listening to music. It was peaceful and we were both smiling the whole time. Afterward, I drove her home and kissed her goodnight. Yes kissed! That night was Almost as great as the night in the tunnel.
Love always,
Charlie

Dear friend,
Friday was the last day of school for me. That Sunday morning started early. I hadn't heard from Patrick or Sam but I wasn't that worried since I'd see them at graduation. I had to drive all my cousins from Ohio. They pulled out a "joint" as they passed it around. I didn't smoke any cause I wasn't in the mood but all they just said was the same thing as always.
"You're such a pussy Charlie."
Soon we all arrived as my dad was getting the video camera out of the trunk. My sister left us as she follows the crowd of graduates to the field. As we managed to find seats in the bleachers I was worriedly searching for Sam and Patrick. I let out a breath of relief once I finally found them. I couldn't tell if Sam was happy or not to be there but just seeing her was enough. They started the speeches and as it went on the diplomas started to be handed out. First Mary Elizabeth, then Alice, then Patrick and Sam. It was a great day even when I saw Brad. We met my sister in the parking lot we're all so proud of her. When we got home from graduation my cousins went straight to the bars since that's where all the new graduates are gonna be. I watched as my sister opened her presents. The only people who didn't get her anything were my brother and I. The best part was when my mom said I had a phone call.
"Charlie?"
"Sam!"
"What time are you coming over?" She asked.
"Now!" I said.
My father looked at me, "You aren't going anywhere until your relatives leave."
"Uh... sorry Sam but I can't leave until my relatives leave."
"Okay, Charlie... we'll be here until seven I think." Sam sounded happy.
"Okay. Congratulations!"
"Thanks. Bye."
"Bye."
I hung up.
It felt like my relatives were never gonna leave but by 9:50 my dad handed me the keys and nodded. Sam had told me they were at a party downtown so that was where I was headed. When I got there Sam danced with me and we talked for a bit. After the dance, we went to Peter's apartment, and I gave everyone their presents. I split my books evenly between Patrick and Sam. I even wrote them both cards using my typewriter.
"I'm going to miss all of you when you go to college." That's when I started crying so Sam had to take me to the kitchen. I calmed down a bit.
"Charlie, you know I'm leaving in a week." Sam said.
" I know."
"Are you scared of being alone?"
"Uh-huh."
"Well let's make a deal. How about we call each other when things get bad."
"Can we write letters to each other?"
"Yes." Sam smiled
I left and went home after that. The next day we all went to Sam and Patrick's to pack up Sam's truck and watch her leave. Sam was checking everything twice. Finally, Sam got into her truck. She called me over and gave me one more kiss.
"I love you a lot Charlie. And I always will."
"I love you too Sam. Forever and always."
"I'll come to visit Charlie." Sam was smiling and somehow her eyes seemed even more green.
"I know you will." I kissed her one last time before closing the door for her. As Patrick started up the truck and pulled out of the driveway I could feel the tears coming down my face but I was smiling. It wasn't a goodbye but a see you later. Eventually, I will see her again and I'll still love her.
Love always,
Charlie.
