Hank started the fire while I lit the hurricane lantern to make sure the horses were settled. Thankfully, mine could ground tie but since Hank's couldn't, I tied both our rides loosely to a nearby tree.
"Beans for supper?" Hank asked me, calling from the fire pit, where I could now see a slight flicker of light appearing.
"Sure." I say, but then hesitate. Something was wrong, that wasn't Hank's voice. "Hank?" I call out, but there's no response. Standing next to the horses, I can only watch as a shadowed figure unhinges his jaw and starts sprinting towards me.
