prologue | running away

-PROLOGUE-

6 years prior

"I don't understand, why am I such a burden to you, Mama?"13-year-old Sana raised her voice. Uncle Karim was watching TV with Amon at the time, and he covered the 9-year-old boy's ears, saying, "Let's not listen to that."

"I never said you were a burden, Sana. You make my life difficult nearly all the time with your stupid sneaking out and doing all the vigilante things I don't want you to!" Adrianna yelled back. 

"I'm mature, I have powers to save me, you yourself taught me combat, and I am thirteen years old! I can practically manage myself!" Scowled the teen, crossing her arms across her chest. "Plus, it's not like I'm gonna meet a boy, considering I'm the gayest thing in this room!" 

"I'm sorry, WHAT?!" The woman exclaimed. "You--"

"You heard me! Now god, can you stop being such an overreacting psychopath?!" Sana scoffed. 

"Young lady, I am your mother--" Adrianna placed her hands on the dining table, nearly shaking with anger.

"Where the hell were you, then, when I was getting my ass kidnapped by Intergang? Some mother you are!" Replied the teenager. "Oh wait, you were busy with your precious little Amon, weren't you? Because you wanted to have a kid who's not as messed up as me." 

"Maybe I do!" Adrianna slammed her hands down on the tabletop, making Sana flinch slightly. "Maybe I didn't want to handle a whiny, ungrateful, selfish brat like you, who came out alright, but ended up a mistake." 

"Adrianna-" Karim stepped in, placing a hand on his sister's shoulder, but she snapped, "Stay out of this, Karim." 

"Wow. Nice to know how you really think of me." Sana said, wiping her tears away furiously. "Nice to know that the one person I genuinely loved in this hellhole of a place actually hates me. You know, when you asked me about what happened a year ago, you know after I became a mistake, you pretended to care, isn't it? Instead you just wanted to get it over with, and get this shit out of my system, before your precious Amon learned that his sister is a freak." She looked at her brother's uncovered ears and said, "I know you care, Momo. This isn't your fault, don't worry."

"No, no, no, don't try and deceive my son like that, girl." Adrianna hissed. "You know what? Everything you said is true. After the incident, I don't know where my sweet, beautiful girl went. I only can see an unkind, unempathetic, deceitful little freak where my daughter once was." 

Feeling like a knife had been stabbed into her heart, Sana slammed her fist on the table and said, "Fine. You won't have to worry about me so much tomorrow onwards. Let me get one thing crystal clear. The same way you hate me, I. Hate. You. And remember this day as the one where you lost your biggest ally, and the one who looked up to you the most." With those words, Sana stormed into her room and locked the door shut. 

That same night, she packed herself a bag, putting in only necessities like clothes and some food. Padding into her mother's room in the shape of a rat, she got into the money cabinet and took enough money for sustenance and shelter. She returned to her room and looked at it one last time, before exiting and locking the door from the inside with the help of a crafty demon. 

She kissed her sleeping brother on the forehead, whispering, "I'm sorry, little brother." With those words, she climbed onto the balcony window, backpack on her shoulders, and leapt down. At the last second, her shape shifted to a massive peregrine falcon, and she soared away, far from home.
