Poem 9: When Reality Hits

Sometimes you don't know just how much it hurts.

Or how much you miss something—

Until it all comes crashing down.

Deep within me, the feelings are there,

But I don't feel them.

Maybe it is because I'm so busy,

Or too distracted.

Until life catches up and reality hits me.

I'm hours away from my home.

Patiently counting down the days,

Until I can come home.

Home to my father,

Home to my dog,

Being able to hug my sister, my father

Play with my dog, their tail wagging as they run around.

I just need to wait a little longer.

Almost there, just a little longer.

Day by day,

Week by week,

Month by month,

Until the day I can finally go home.
