The reflection of the water from the Black Lake shone through the glass panes of the windows in the Slytherin common room. Merula gazed up into the waters above as she toyed with her wand, twirling it around in her hands. As she leaned against the window frame, she couldn't help but let her mind drift off to what happened previously in the day...

**

"You want my help looking for a Cursed Vault?" Merula scoffed staring down her one and only rival (well, one of many), Y/N L/N. "And why should I help you?"
"Please Merula. You've been in my brother's room far more times than I have. You must have found something useful in there that could lead us closer to the next vault!" Y/N pleaded. Merula frowned. For Y/N, 'us' usually meant them and their friends, not Y/N and Merula.
"If I found anything then I would have gotten much closer to finding a vault already. You can tear the place apart and you still won't find anything L/N. Now leave me alone." Merula crossed her arms and began walking away, only to have her arm yanked back. Merula stumbled backwards, turning to protest against the sudden gesture. Merula's words quickly caught in her throat. 'Their face is so close...' Merula internally screamed, Y/N's nose only inches away from hers.

"Look. I know we're not exactly friends, but I need your help. I don't care about the vaults or the power within them or whatever. I just want to find my brother. If you help me, you can have whatever power you may find or whatever. Please, just help me find my brother." Merula stared at Y/N with wide eyes, feeling as though she had just been threatened. But the frown on Y/N's face, the desperation in their eyes, the shaky grip that they had on her arm, Merula couldn't help but feel a little bit of pity. Merula sighed.
"Fine... I'll help you. But you owe me a a butterbeer or something okay," Merula grumbled.
"Is this you asking me out on a date?"
The abrupt question made Merula tense up, her face flushing pink.
"NO! Absolutely not! Just- Let's just go!" And off the messy hair Slytherin stormed away, Y/N quickly following after.

Jacob's room was just as Merula had remembered, dusty and cold, matted with cobwebs in every nook and cranny. Sunlight leaked into the room, but very little of it, so the room was very dim. It would be hard to see anything that Merula hadn't found in the room yet, and she had looked everywhere for some kind of clue to the Cursed Vaults. Merula sighed,
"Alright. Now what is it that you think-" She froze, stopping dead in her tracks. There Y/N stood, their head turned away, holding out a small envelope out to Merula. The envelope was black, with a green heart sticker keeping it closed.
"Merula..." Y/N started. "I know you probably hate me. And I know we're supposed to be rivals. But... I like you. In a romantic way..." Merula's eyes widened, her gaze shifting from the envelope to Y/N's face. Upon further inspection, their face was bright red.
"I didn't exactly know how to explain my feelings out loud, so I wrote it all in that letter. You obviously don't have to answer now! But... I just want to know if you feel the same. If you don't, then we can just go back to being rivals. Merula versus Y/N, like it's always been." Merula still stared down at Y/N, words caught in her throat. "Just take the damn letter already!" Y/N grumbled. Merula reached out her hand slowly, taking the envelope from Y/N's hands. But as soon as the envelope left Y/N's grip, they ran out the door, leaving Merula alone in the dim dusty room.

**

Merula grit her teeth, scowling at her feelings as she shoved her wand back into the pocket of her robes. A crinkling sound came from the inside of the pocket, making Merula freeze up and look down into it. Right, she forgot she put that there. Merula frowned as she pulled out the letter, the paper now wrinkly from crumbling it up, only to open it up again and again. She lost count of how many times she had read the letter. It was just as Y/N said. It contained all of Y/N's emotions toward Merula, both the good and the bad. She couldn't help but blush just thinking about the contents of the letter, as it had distracted her during all her classes  that day. Merula sighed.
"What are you doing to me L/N?" Merula muttered to herself. "This letter changes everything..."

It seemed as though Merula's world was falling apart. She had taken a liking to having a rival. The lighthearted teasing, the duels, the competition, she had grown used to it. Whatever Y/N accomplished had always pushed Merula to work hard to be the best she could be. But the letter she held in her hands changed everything. What would it mean for the two of them now?
Merula rested her head on the wall, her gaze returning to the window. Since Y/N's letter was so well written, she supposed that she should write a letter in return. She'd write a letter so much better than Y/N's that they'd be swooning for her in no time. Merula smiled in defeat.
"I'm really giving in to these feelings, huh?"
Merula stood from her window perch, making her way back to her room with letter in hand. Perhaps this wasn't a bad thing. Maybe they could have a romantic rivalry. Whatever happened next didn't matter. The relationship between her and Y/N would always be there, no matter what they were to each other.

Merula liked Y/N. Her enemy. Her desire. And maybe one day... her lover.

A/N My autocorrect kept changing Merula to so many other names 💀 If you see any typos, please let me know so I can fix it.

Anyway, thank you for reading the first oneshot of this book, requested by my friend GaYwItCh15 . It was kind of lazy and rushed, sorry. But I tried. I haven't written any oneshots in a while haha.

I'm actually planning my own fanfic book between Merula x my OC, Artemis! It will mostly focus on my OC more than the romance factor but I would really appreciate the support once I get around to writing it! Maybe I'll even write a few Artemis oneshots here!

Anyway, thank you for reading!
