BEEP!BEEP!BEEEP!
'Ah, what the fuck, man', he thought to himself as he stretched his arm to reach for the shrieking alarm clock on his nightstand. He slammed the button on top, permanently silencing it (at least until he had to turn it back on for the coming night).
The boy was planning to go back to sleep, but unfortunately, he heard his mother's sweet voice call for him from outside his door.
"Percy!" the woman called out. "Don't try to go back to sleep! You need to get ready for school, and breakfast is almost ready!"
'Damn it, she knows me too well" he thought.
"Okay mom, I'll be ready in a few!"
He jumped out the bed and sped towards the bathroom so he can take a shower, only to run back out when he realized he forgot to bring a towel.
Though it doesn't seem like it at face value, Percy Jackson was actually excited to go to school today. It wasn't because he wanted to go to class and learn, God, he couldn't give a shit if he tried. No, he's excited because today, he, his friends, and a whole bunch of students who signed the form and paid the small fee, were going on a class trip to the KronoCorp Tower, one of the tallest buildings in Manhatten. He really wanted to see what cool stuff was going on in there, with the added bonus of hanging out with his friend group.
Percy took a quick yet thorough shower, got dressed, slung his bag over his shoulder, and walked to the kitchen. He saw his mother putting the food on two plates, setting his plate in front of the seat he usually sat in. The food smelled delicious.
Percy's mother, Sally, is what many people call these days 'an absolute angel'. She was really quite lovely, with her soft, sweet voice, her gentle touch, and her love-filled eyes. She was a woman full of positivity and kindness, who never spoke ill of any person, even if that person totally deserves it (like Percy's step father, Smelly Gabe, who was the douchiest mother fucker in the whole world).
Percy loved his mother very much, she was one of the most important, if not THE most important person in the world for him. Yes, he loved his friends, and he and his biological dad were close, but no one compared to Sally Jackson.
"How'd you sleep, hon'?" His mom asked.
"Good. Hey mom, these blue eggs and ham are delicious."
Why, thank you, glad you liked them."
Percy quickly gobbled up his meal, washed his plate (though his mother protested, wanting to take care of it for him), took his bag and prepared to leave his apartment. Before that, though, he had one question:
"Where's Gabe?"
"Oh, he's still asleep. Probably still tired from his shift yesterday" his mom replied.
"Doesn't he have a shift today? Like, now, in fact?"
She just shrugged her shoulders, as if to say 'what else is new'.
Gabe Ugliano. Ugh, fuck that guy.
There are many words to describe this man: repugnant, disgusting, lazy, irresponsible, selfish, greedy, and unfortunately, violent.
Sally married Gabe when Percy was 5 years old, 4 years after his father Poseidon had abruptly left and lost all contact. The mother and son were in a bind for money, and Gabe seemed willing to help. In fact, at the time, the guy was actually pretty nice. Too bad years of beer, gambling, and pigging around turned him into the creature he is today. It's a miracle he manages to keep his job.
Oh yeah, and he beats Percy. Forgot to mention that part. Percy could fight back, but then Gabe would feel the need to put his hands on Sally instead, and Percy ain't havin' none of that. So he takes the beating.
Anyway, where were we? Oh, right!
Percy told his mother to ignore the pig, and to have a safe and successful day at work today. He gave her a hug, a kiss on the cheek, and he left his apartment.
Too bad he just missed the school bus.
Again.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Percy had to sprint all the way to school. He missed the bus, forgot his skateboard at the apartment, and just started running without thinking to whistle for a taxi or call his friend Charles Beckendorf (a kind junior with a license) to give him a ride. So he ran.
Obviously, he got to school late, 20 minutes after 7:30 when classes usually start. Luckily, the bus for the school trip wouldn't arrive until 8:30, and all the students going on the trip have to wait in thw cafeteria in the mean time, so Percy didn't technically need to be on time today.
Percy walked to his locker, put some stuff in, and then he made his way toward the cafeteria. There, he say his friends sitting at their usual lunch table.
First, there's Grover Underwood, a brown haired, brown eyed guy with a furry chin and a love for nature. Percy's been best friends with him since 6th grade, when he protected Grover from bullies like Nancy B. Grover walks with a noticeable limp, which he got from an accident when he was too small to remember.
Second, there's Jason and Thalia Grace. Though they are siblings, Thalia being the older one who's a junior, they look and act nothing alike. Thalia had black, semi-long, spiky hair and electric blue eyes. She was the embodiment of the goth stereotype; she dressed like one, and she acted like one. On the other hand, Jason was a tall blonde, hair militarily cropped, same blue eyes but a scar on the corner of his lip. Jason was usually a by-the-book kind of guy, but he can be fun when he wanted to be.
Third, there's the beauty queen Piper McLean, a Cherokee descendent with choppy, chocolate-brown hair, caramel colored skin and kaleidoscope eyes. She was the daughter of famous actor, Tristan McLean, but unlike your typical celebrity child, Piper didn't flaunt her status or act superior to anyone. She was actually quite humble and easy going, one of the many things Percy appreciates about her (and one of the many reasons why Jason, her boyfriend, loves her).
Fourth, there's Leo Valdez, a short, brown-haired Latino-American guy with a knack for building and repairing things. His best quality is his sense of humor; he can brighten any room he enters with his corny jokes, cringey pick up lines and just overall friendly demeanor. That's probably how he managed to gain the attraction of one of the prettiest girls in school, Calypso Titan.
Next, there's Hazel Levesque, a dark skinned, curly-brown haired girl with golden eyes. She's cute and innocent, and yet very wise and caring. Hazel manages to delight anyone who crosses her path. She doesn't like to curse, and talks about sex and romance makes her blush in embarrassment. Basically, all her friends like to tease her.
Last but not least, there's Frank Zhang, Hazel's boyfriend. He's a tall Canadian-American with short, black hair and a baby face. Though he may look intimidating to strangers, everyone who knows him understand that he's a giant teddy bear with almost as much innocence as Hazel. They were made for each other.
Now, those are all the people at the table; the group has other friends that just chose not to come on the trip today, like Nico, Will, Reyna, the Stoll Brothers, Katie, Beckendorf, his girlfriend Silena, Clarisse and her boyfriend Chris, and Rachel.
Am I missing someone? Oh of course! Her! In fact, she's entering the cafeteria with some of her friends right now.
While the group is talking, Percy turns around to the sound of footsteps and girl talk. When he sees who walks in, his heart skips a beat and he forgets to breath.
Annabeth Chase has arrived. One of the most popular girls in school, an A+ scholar with athletic capabilities, and the apple of his eye.
In other words, Percy really likes her.
A lot.
