"Toby you were supposed to turn back there."
"Relax, I wanted to take the long way."
"Why?"
"This way's usually safer."
"Hmph."
He was right of course but we were really late. Every time I remind him of this he'd say,
"Will you calm down, Sam? It's only an extra 7 minutes."
Again he was right, we only had about 4 minutes left until we were at school. His phone rang and I rolled my eyes at his ringtone.
"OMG SOMEONE'S ACTUALLY TEXTING YOU! YOU BETTER ANSWER THE PHONE BEFORE THEY HANG UP!" I leaned over to the best to my ability so that I could reach the phone when I hear a loud honking. I look back just in time to see a large red semi truck heading straight for us, Toby and I's screaming drown out any other sounds. All is black.

"You'll make it, I'm positive. You just have to wake up." I think that's what the voice said, but it was hard to understand, my head is throbbing uncontrollably.
"To-Tob-Toby?" I breathe out, lifting my arm out to the voice.
"Slow down, Samantha."
A warm hand is wrapped around mine and I try to open my eyes, realizing that it's not Toby's voice. "Where- where is he?" The hand gently squeezed mine.
"Your brother is going to be ok, but I'm afraid he's in a different section of the trauma bay."
"Trauma bay?" My mind is reeling as I try to recall what happened. My eyes finally coming into focus on a boy my age, about 18. He was the one holding my hand, he had dark blond hair that hadn't yet been brushed, green eyes, a gentle smile, and he was wearing blue scrubs.
"Oh no. No please I'm not ready yet. Please Toby needs me I can't cross over yet-"
"Hey, hey, hey, it's ok. Take a deep breath. What's wrong sweetie."
"You. I can't leave Toby yet, I'm all he has. Please tell God not to send anymore Angels, I'm not ready."
His smile drops and is replaced with concern as he places a hand to my forehead.
I begin muttering prayers asking God to take the Angel back and his smile returns.
"Samantha you are in the hospital, not heaven. My names Jacob."
"You-you mean you're not an angel?" He chuckled gently.
"No I'm not an angel. Well I am your nurse, so technically I am your 'guardian angel'. You've been out for a few hours, do you remember anything from the crash."
"Crash,crash,crash...yes? I was going to school, no Toby was driving...is he okay?"
His face turned grim, my heart plummeted, and my stomach jumped in my throat.
"He's in surgery right now, but I would like to tell you that there are practically no chances he will die."
"What happened?"
"Shrapnel, there is a large chance that he may lose his vision in his left eye, however we have excellent surgeons and there are always other options."
I lifted my hand free of his and clutched my head.
"No we should've taken the shorter way. But the long way was always safer, how could this-" Realization swept over me that we weren't the only ones in the crash and I was immediately filled with even more guilt.
"What happened to the other driver?"
"The man who crashed into you fell asleep at the wheel, his artery was severed and he bled to death.
He um, wanted us to tell you he is sorry, he had been driving for 13 hours. He knows that that's not good enough but it's all he can say, I'm sorry."
Tears ran down my face and I grabbed his hand again.
"Did he have a family?"
Jacob sighed, and looked away.
"He had a six month old girl at home, she's going to live with her aunt and uncle." I cried harder and did something that surprised even myself.
"Can I have a hug?"
He too looked surprised, but almost in a pleasant way. He gently wrapped his arms around me but stayed there only for a moment or two. The door cracked open and a mans face appeared.
"Jacob. He's out of surgery, but he's not allowed to leave. He asked for his sister before he went in, can she move?"
"Not yet sir."
"Okay well, will you take her down there tomorrow?"
Jacob nodded and the mans face disappeared.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Are you ready?" I nodded and leaned forward in anticipation.
He opened the door to a dark room and wheeled me to the side of Toby's bed. It's the second day of being in the hospital, he's been in surgery two more times, and Toby still hasn't woken up, but the doctors assumed he would wake up today. My hand was already wrapped around his and I was speaking to him as though he were awake, Jacob would occasionally talk to him too. I would often apologize for making a life changing decision for him when he didn't even know he had to make one. Jacob and I are now best friends and know a lot about each other, he had to check my memory so we would often tell each other about ourselves. Seeing the white bandages on Toby's left eye brought tears to mine. I knew he would be sad but I also knew he would think it was kind of cool after some time. Jacob and I are telling him that his girlfriend would be able to visit him tonight when a light moan escapes his lips.
"Toby?" I shook his hand gently.
"Sammy?" He cried out to me and tightened his grip on my hand. I knew he couldn't see me and that he was going to freak out so I squeezed his hand back.
"I'm right here, Toby. It's okay."
"It's dark, Sammy! I can't see." He cried and clutched the sheets tightly, Jacob began speaking to him in a soothing tone and pushed him back on the bed.
"Shhh. It's okay, Toby. Listen to me. You were in a crash, do you remember?" Toby's body slowly relaxed and he nodded his head.
"Good. Now, your sister is right here and I know that it's dark right now but focus on my voice. Your eye was damaged by a piece of shrapnel and you had to be taken to surgery. Your eye was damaged beyond repair, but we did have one donated to you so that you will be able to see out of both eyes. I can take the bandages off now if you'd like."
Tears soaked the bandages as he repeatedly shook his head back and forth.
"No,no,no,no,no,no,no,no! This isn't happening no! It's not real!"
I try getting out of the wheelchair but my legs fail me. I instead crawl into the bed next to my little brother and hug him tightly.
"Go on, Jacob." He nodded to me and began unwrapping the bandages.
"Alright Toby, I need you to close your eyes for me." At last I could see his eyelids clenched shut.
"I want you to open your eyes now, it should still be dark okay."
His eyes gingerly fell open, revealing his non matching pair of eyes.
"Alright, now I'm going to turn on the light."
Toby made strangled screaming noise and pulled me so close I thought my lungs were going to give out.
"I'm so sorry Sammy!" He sobbed onto my shoulder and I wept on his. Jacob headed for the door.
"I'll give you two some privacy."
