We pulled away from each other with a sob.
"I'm so sorry!" I pushed his hair away from his green eye.
"It was my fault Sammy, I'm sorry." He sniffled and clenched his eyes shut.
"I'm fine! I'm fine! The car does not matter! The only thing bad happened to you! I'm sorry!"
I finely calmed him down enough to where he could breath quietly again.
"Sammy..."
He looked at me for moment, then blinked silently. He slowly looked around the room.
"Dammit... This eye sees better than this one." He points to the bright blue eye on his left side. I tried not to laugh as he smiled at me.
"Toby!" I hit him gently.
"Aww cmon! This is a serious matter!"
I rolled my eyes.
"I know it is... What kind of glasses are you going to get?"
"I'm not."
There was a quiet tapping that interrupted my argument.
"Hey guys, I need to check everyone out and then I'll need to send in the Doctor." Jacob came in the room and picked me up, gently replacing me in my wheelchair.
"Sorry sweetheart." I groaned as my body was put in the chair, pain flaring inside me. But still I smiled at my nurse through gritted teeth.
"It's fine."
He gave me a slight pet on the head and checked my and Toby's vitals.
"Can you stare at my nose?"
Toby stared at his nose as Jacob moved his hand around him.
"Try not to close your eyes bud."
He next put a flashlight in front of his face.
"Can you look up? Left. Right. Down. Good job! Now then, on to the head trauma." He went around so he could see the back of Toby's head, to find gauze pads and leaking blood.
"You're a very lucky young man Toby. Also, you have a good sister, she convinced us not to shave your head!" He laughed, but Toby had turned slightly pale.
"So I'll need to change your bandages and check on your stitches, then I'll need to get that cast on your leg! Now that you're awake you probably won't kick anyone else!" Jacob laughed.
"Who did I kick?"
"Well, I am your nurse..." He moved his shirt up and we could see a dark bruise forming in the shape of a foot.
"Toby!"
"I didn't mean to!"
Jacob laughed in an upbeat sense.
"It's totally fine dude, chill! I'm gonna go get the doctor." He stepped outside and I glared slightly at my little brother. He shrugged guiltily and cringed into his bed.
"So this is your doctor!"
"Hello, Toby. It's nice to see your eyes open!" Toby looked guiltily at me, and then back to his doctor.
"Yeah..."
"Alright, so the main damage is, you had an ocular perforating injury, which is a two full-thickness lacerations of the eye wall, due to the metal bar that pierced your eye. You also hit your head quite hard on...something, ah, and you broke you leg in seven different places.
I'm also sorry to report that you will have to stay in the hospital for a little while, as well as your sister."
"Oh... Okay..." My little brother looked stricken by the doctors words.
"What happened?"
Jacob stepped into the conversation as the doctor sat back.
"As you were driving to school, a man in his 18 wheeler fell asleep, he rammed into your vehicle head on, he was DOA." Toby looked like he had been hit with a board across his face.
"Oh."
"Little miss, it is time for YOUR vitals." He pulled my wheelchair around so he could check me out as the doctor checked out Toby.
"You are three years older then me, do not call me little miss." I huffed out, crossing my arms.
"Yes mam." He nodded. He took my temperature, blood pressure, and checked my memory.
"What's your full name?"
"Samantha Grace Woodrow."
"Okay, what's my name?"
"Jacob."
"What am I to you?"
"You're my nurse."
"Good. How old are you?"
"Almost eighteen."
"Wonderful, why are you in the hospital?"
"I was in a car accident."
"Okay, what is your best friends name?"
"Alice Belle Harrison, she's a Disney child as you can tell."
"Awesome, favorite color?"
"Orange, not a burnt orange, sunset orange."
"What's my favorite color?"
"A sea glass tealish blue, the color of my eyes."
"Perfection, I'm proud of you little miss." He pet my head and walked to the door.
"I'm gonna go get the tools for his cast."
The doctor left as well, leaving Toby and I to speak to one another.
"How do you feel?"
"Like I came out of the back end of a horse."
Toby answered.
"Me too, me too."
Jacobs head popped in.
"What color cast to you want Toby?"
"Pink."
"Gotcha covered brah!"
His head disappeared and Toby wiped a single tear from under his blue eye.
"I miss her too..." I whispered.
"What?"
"Mom. I miss her too."
He sniffled and stared at me.
"I know Sammy. I know." Jacob came back with everything he needed and quickly put a gauzy fleece like sleeve on Toby's leg.
"Now then, I'm just gonna wrap all this gauze around you, okay?"
"Mmhmm."
"Great." He began wrapping carefully, as he did with my casts. It didn't take him to long, maybe about ten minutes, until he got to the color.
"Is this shade of pink alright?"
"Do you have anything softer?"
"I can find some. I'll be right back!" He returned in a few minutes with a soft baby pink color.
"How about now?"
"Perfect."
He wrapped the color on with a smile.
"I brought a sharpie so you guys can doodle on each others casts." He handed me the market and told me to let his cast dry a bit, but Toby could draw on mine for now.
"Why did you get orange?"
"Cause it's my favorite color."
"Humph."
"Toby...I know you miss her, I miss her, I would have gotten pink too, but I was unconscious, Jacob did it while I was asleep, he chose for me cause my favorite color is orange."
"Okay, give me the marker, and your arm."
"Alright, alright." I handed him the marker and wheeled to his side. He doodled all over the thing, besides the only other signature on the cast, everything else Toby had drawn and scribbled.
"Toby's cast can be doodled on now." Jacob alerted us.
"Thanks bro." They high fived and I rolled my eyes at Toby and Jacobs immaturity. Toby handed me the marker.
"Alright, hold still."
I steadily drew the breast cancer awareness sign in the middle of his cast.
"Is that what you wanted my little brother?"
"Yes it is. Though it looks shitty since you used your left hand."
"Shut up."
