" Phew...I think we are safe here," Heizou mumbled, trying to catch his breath. Behind him were Kazuha and Tomo, hands on their knees and panting with fatigue. Above them, the moon was shining brightly in the sky and illuminating the cracked windows of the abandoned house in Konda Village. It was near midnight, the three vision holders had been on the run for five days, and it was time for bed. They collapsed onto the wooden floor, staring at the holes in the roof. Without saying another word, Kazuha, Tomo and Heizou tried to get their well deserved sleep."Hey, Kaz', you awake?" a weary voice rang in Kazuha's ear. Yes, he was still awake. As tired as he was, he could not sleep - not with the fear of being caught lingering in his heart. Still, Kazuha did not have the energy to reply, let alone talk, so he simply remained quiet. Tomo took this as a sign to continue. The next thing that left his mouth left Kazuha in shock.
"How do you think it would feel to face the Musou No Hitotachi? Would I be able to survive the divine punishment?" Tomo wondered, voice filled with curiosity. Kazuha was flabbergasted. A million thoughts raced through his head: What did Tomo mean by that? Why would he even have a question like that? Didn't he know that no one had ever survived the Musou no Hitotachi?
Tomo's voice shook him out of his trance. "Never mind, forget I said anything. Goodnight Kaz'."When Kazuha woke up, he heard soft snores. Beside him was Heizou, sleeping peacefully while curled up into a ball. Gently ruffling Heizou's hair, Kazuha let out an amused chuckle. Sitting up, he realised that Tomo was missing. A tinge of anxiety stung Kazuha's heart. That was until he noticed a little note left on the floor:
Good morning, Kazuha! Don't panic, I just went to catch some fish for lunch. I'll be back by noon! - Your dearest friend, Tomo.
A relieved sigh left Kazuha's mouth. At least he isn't doing anything dangerous. Though, he could get caught... Just as quickly as the negative thought intruded his mind, he shrugged it off. Despite his child-like, innocent smile, Tomo was not as dumb and useless as he looked, and he knew how to hide from the soldiers. Kazuha trusted him. Kazuha knew that he would be safe. Kazuha knew that he would come back. Deciding to do something useful, he grabbed a dusty axe and began gathering some firewood.
The sun was setting and the sky was coloured with different shades of orange. Normally, Kazuha would have relished such beautiful scenery, but his stomach was knotted with trepidation.
"Why isn't Tomo back yet...?" Kazuha wondered, eyebrows furrowing. Absent-mindedly, he began pacing around the house. Every second passing made his heart beat faster and faster.
All of a sudden, he heard approaching footsteps. Immediately, he hid behind a wall and covered his mouth with his hands. Peeking from the window, he spotted two approaching Tenryou soldiers. They seemed to be discussing intensely, so Kazuha decided to listen in. I just hope Tomo is safe, he prayed.
"Did you hear about the guy that challenged Kujou Sara to a duel?" one started.
"Yep. It was some blond-haired guy with an electro vision. He was so dumb, to think that he would've been able to defeat Kujou Sara. Apparently, he is going to face Musou no Hitotachi, " the other replied, rolling his eyes. At that moment, the realisation hit Kazuha. A blond-haired person, electro vision, tried to defeat Kujou Sara, face the Musou no Hitotachi. There was only one person Kazuha could think of that fit all of the descriptions.
"No, no, no!" Kazuha thought, cold sweat dripping from his forehead. When the soldiers walked away, Kazuha immediately grabbed his sword and dashed out of the house to look for Heizou in the forest. If what the soldiers said was true and not just some rumours, Tomo was in hot soup.
"Heizou!" Kazuha shouted, gasping for air. The moment Heizou spotted him, he immediately put his axe down and rushed to Kazuha.
"What's wrong?" Heizou asked, shocked by the look of despair on his friend's face.
"Tomo...he...he-"When Heizou heard what had happened from Kazuha, a riot of emotions tore through him. Yes, he was shocked, and yes, he was scared, but mostly, he was angry. How could Tomo have done something so reckless? Tomo knew his limits, and he knew that he had no chance of beating Kujou Sara, let alone surviving the wrath of Musou no Hitotachi!
"That stupid idiot..." Heizou grumbled, cursing under his breath. A tense silence grew between the two. Kazuha was the first to break the silence.
"I'm going to look for him. If I can make it in time, maybe we could escape together."
Shocked, Heizou stared at Kazuha with eyes as round as two moons. He was hoping that Kazuha was joking. Kazuha would not possibly risk his life trying to save his friend, would he?However, all it took to convince Heizou was the determination lighting up Kazuha's eyes. Hesitantly, Heizou took his Kasa hat off his head, and placed it on top of Kazuha's head.
"Here, take this to help cover your face. Once you save Tomo, meet me at the ship dock. Then we will all escape together," Heizou paused for a moment, gulping. "Please, promise me. Promise me that the two of you will be well and alive."
"I promise."
