"What the fuck is that?!" I screamed, hair sticking to my face as I bolted out of bed. The dream was so vivid as if I was looking through someone's eyes directly at the events in front of me. "Samuel? Who the fuck is Samuel?! And that Ruby and that Nathaniel?" I was talking like crazy to myself in the empty hotel room I rented for two nights because I couldn't afford any more. I glance at the clock; 06:46am. I get up and take a glass of water, yesterday the policeman in charge of me called me after I got out of prison. When you go free, nothing is really free at least for a while. You have been assigned a guardian, security guard or whatever to visit you and help you orientate yourself and of course not to make a mess and end up back.He found me a job, which is his duty. Today, I start at seven as a store clerk at the local Walmart. I put on a thick sweater and jeans, it can be chilly in the warehouse and this is New York, it rains occasionally. I take the umbrella leaning next to the door, which I borrowed from the hotel corridor, so to speak.
I step out onto the already awake streets of New York as I push my way through people who resemble ants as they move quickly as if in a column taking up every inch of sidewalk.
I enter the market, the smell of cleaning products, rubber and strawberries is feelt in the air. The guard at the door greets me with a smile and I smile back. A stocky man, a little fuller with a bald head, but nice.
I read his name tag; Paul.
I'll remember that the next time I go in to say hello.
"Hi, I'm Selena, the manager of this Walmart! You must be Shelly?" A large girl, with blue eyes and a small, tiny mouth, looked questioningly at me offering her hand. I must look like a sloth because it takes me five minutes to understand what is happening around me. "Yes, yes! Sorry, I haven't woken up yet! Nice to meet you, Selena!" I finally answer and shake her hand nervously.
The rest of the morning is spent cleaning, wiping the shelves, packing items. I finally got a ten minute break, I go to the back room for the workers and take the pastry that one of my colleagues went to the bakery to buy a little while ago.
The dough melts on my lips, I stare at the flashing neon light on the ceiling for no apparent reason.
But what really caught me off guard was a radiating pain in a way that shatters my brain - or at least that's what if feels like. I drop my food and wince.
The neon light is starting to sting my eyes. I cover my left eye with one hand, trying to suppress the pain.
What the hell is going on?
Suddenly, images come to me in parts and each one sends more and more painful signals to my brain. I see the man from my dream again. He steps out of the plane, his hair blowing in the wind and his sunset-colored eyes shining in the sun. Around him is an empty field, and there in front is a dense forest that seems to stretch for miles and miles. He wears a black coat and a red scarf around his neck, his pale skin sparkles like diamonds in the light, almost as if it is transparent. A blonde comes out after him, they are all characters from my dream last night.
I support myself grabbing the end of the chair I am sitting on while tears are streaming down my face.
He smiles and my blood froze in my veins. Two perfectly pointed, white fangs were exposed.
Again, it's like I'm looking through someone else's eyes, only this time I'm fully awake. I enter the bathroom of the market intended for staff. I take a bag full of cold water and spray my face.
This is not happening.
But it is happening, right now some force is persistently trying to control my brain and show me pure nonsense.
The skin is porcelain white, shines in the sun, red-orange colored eyes, fangs, superhuman beauty and speed...
No way!
I shake my head in disbelief, I see nonsense because I watch too many stupid movies.
After two hours of arguing with my brain, I still decide to go to the nearby forest and let myself know that I'm just an idiot.
The taxi leaves me by the side of the road, the man looked around confusedly where he left me, he smiled uneasily as if he was debating whether to leave or stay with me. I smiled at him, letting him know that he could continue.
I don't plan on explaining to him that I'm here to make sure vampires aren't real, he'd think I'm out of my mind, even I think I'm crazy.
I started walking down the already made narrow path. The light streaks through the boughs in both brilliant and shadowy beams.
At first I didn't know what did they meant when they wrote 'Butterfly Forest' on the maps but as I went deeper I realized why; The butterfly sat upon my finger with wings of black and gold, the colour blending and swirling as playful waves upon night sands. As I expended my view I saw more and more of them dancing around the forest like thousand little fireflies in the night.
It was magical.
As I watched the butterfly dance I could hear branches twitching and movement behind the thick forest bushes. I feel sudden rush of the blood up in too my cheeks.
My breath comes in short gasps, and I start feeling sweaty. As the noise became louder my heart beaten faster like a hammer.
When he appeared, and I knew by heart it was him and I don't know how but I did. I vividly remembered the golden,yellow- brown color of his eyes the last time he glared at me –well not me but in my dreams, the color was striking against the background of his pale skin and his dark brown hair. Today, his eyes were a completely different color: a strange ocher, darker than butterscotch, but with the same golden tone.
Samuel's POV
I could smell it a mile away. That sweet, strawberry and vanilla smell that driven me away from my usual afternoon in the new city. I don't know why and I don't know how but it's like the time had stopped and I was not moving the moment that scent washed over me.
Like a wild animal I run towards it,like a lunatic that desperately needed his drugs. As I move fast everything around me is in slow motion as it has always been but this time it was different. All I could see is the sea of butterfly's and the sound of a beating heart.
As I step out to the clear path there it was,the reason of my sudden lust, the high adrenaline rush; Her long platinum blond hair fell in loose waves past her shoulders, with a few black peekaboo strands. She wore a black minidress and combat boots.
Her hair hid beautiful arched brows that framed her large, expressive eyes. She had a delicate, aquiline nose, but a stubborn mouth and chin. The brown freckles covered her face.
Their resemblence was striking.
