'It's hatching!'

'Excuse me,' I choked on my glass of water. 'What?'

And so it was. The stone, at least what I believed to be a stone, was hatching. How did this day start with me showing him pictures of my parents to an egg I perceived as a stone hatch? Lucas was right, it was an egg. Why didn't I notice? When did it even start hatching? The cracks on the egg were spreading like a wildfire. Whatever is in there better--

'What the fuck?'

'Language!' Lucas yelled. The egg had split in two, revealing a small snake as black as the void, with eyes yellow like the sun. 'Not in front of Greg!'

Lucas gave a glance at 'Greg' and then gasped, I expected him to scream but instead, he leaned his hand to his face and gave a grin looking into the snake's eyes.

'Hello!'

'Oh, dear, Mer-- God.'

'Look!' He shoved the small snake to my face, stumbling back a little. 'He's so small!'

'You do know it's s a girl right?'

'How do you know?' Lucas glared.

'The tail,' I pulled his hand closer to my head to get a better look. 'Its tail is thinner.' Lucas huffed before pulling the snake back to him and giving him a stare. 'You might want to change its name.'

'I know, I know.' Lucas groaned in thought. 'How about... Gregoria!'

'What?' I gave him a dead-panned stare. 'We are not naming that--'a I pointed at the snake who was still inside the eggshell. 'Gregoria.'

'Fine then!' Lucas shoved it to me. 'You name her. And she's not an it!'

'Whatever.' I stared at the snake. It reminded me of the old snake I had a strange encounter in Diagon Alley, I wonder how they are. They do look quite alike. 'How about... Pandora?'

'Pandora?' He blinked. 'Why?'

'Because the egg acts like the jar, this little git is the evil.'

'HEY!' Lucas snatched the snake back. 'Not cool!'

'For all we know, it might be poisonous, secretly planning our demise.'

'Still wasn't nice.'

'Fine,' I sighed. 'I'm sorry.'

'It's not me you should be saying sorry to.'

'I wasn't talking to you.'

Lucas jabbed his tongue out before staring back at the snake.

'Pandora it is then.' Lucas grinned. 'Not because you're bad, you're the coolest snake in the world!' Lucas' smile slowly turned into a frown, as if he realised something. 'Mum and Dad won't let me keep her, you take care of her.'

'What--' Lucas shoved the snake toward me. 'I'm not taking care of--'

'Please!' Lucas gave a pout, and what looked like puppy dog eyes.

'No, no,' I turned away. 'Not falling for it.'

Lucas scooched closer to me.

'No.'

Lucas then stood up and grinned at me.

'I'll just leave then, get to know Pandora till I get back.'

He rushed down.

'Hey--!'

But he was long gone, back to where he lived... Hold on. I stood up, glancing at the snake sleeping on my hand. I never knew where he lived... What if... I left the tree house and descended to the path Lucas always took going home.

'He wouldn't mind if I leave you at his doorstep, would he?' I muttered out loud, the snake looked up at me. 'I thought you were asleep.'

I ambled further and further down the path. I took out my pocket watch and groaned. I've been walking for thirty minutes and nothing. But then I heard something, it was faint. Like, chattering. I ran and found a cosy-looking cottage. I stared at the window... Lucas, laughing with his parents. He looks so happy... I wonder if I'll ever feel that way. I shouldn't hope, its a not like I'll ever have a family.

All of a sudden Lucas glanced out the window and into my eyes. I glared at him and raised the snake. Lucas disappeared somewhere inside. Walking towards the cottage, I groaned when I realised that I need to get back before Merilla notices I'm not home. Then again, she should expect me to be gone. It's not like I listen to that ancient woman. The door clicked and Lucas leaned on the doorframe with a mischievous smile. Particularly gesturing to my hair that was filled with twigs and leaves like always when we walked through these parts.

'Nice walk?'

I huffed and shoved the snake to him. He shook his head.

'Nuh-uh.' Lucas pushed it back to me. 'You two will learn to get along.'

'Jeez,' I muttered. Lucas reminded me of Peeves. 'Lucas I'm not--'

'Lucas, dear--?' A middle aged woman glanced at me. 'Who's this young man?'
