a/n: this isn't much of a prologue but i wrote it to be the description of the book and then i ended up writing too much and it doesn't fit for a desc. its kinda a "future scene" to give you an eye into their lives in the future ig. enjoy :)

I glanced over my shoulder, some of the tension releasing from my shoulders when I realised I am alone here. Sighing in slight relief, I tilted the watering can higher, more water pouring out into the pot of dittany. The golden sun beams shone through the rickety, wooden windows which the glass had fallen out of many years prior. The heat of the setting sun warmed my chilled body even in this recent frost. Watching the dust swirl in the sun beams reminded me of a song I often sang with my sister back in school. I began humming, moving on to water another plant, becoming lost in thought. The words of the song started coming back to me, and I sang, my voice slowly rising in volume as I went. It might be reaching, but I could swear the plants perked up as I sang louder, my voice ringing through the glowing green house.

A throat being cleared startled me out of my trance, the watering-can falling from my hands. I turned around, a hand over my heart, my eyes wide as I saw who interrupted me. Charlie stood a few feet behind me, his eyebrows raised and a dimpled smile on his face. The sun made his face glow, his hazel eyes standing out, and I knew my own face was flushed.

"Charles," I breathed, my heart stuttering in my chest. "You frightened me."

He bowed his head slightly, looking sheepish. "My apologies, Maeve." He used my full name like I'd used his and I would've laughed had I not been so startled and embarrassed.

I stepped back until my behind pressed against the table of plants I'd been watering. Charlie advanced slightly, putting less distance between us. My breath caught and I focused my gaze on his face as I cleared my throat. "Is there something you ... needed?"

"Right, Dean wanted me to fetch you," He glanced down at my hand over my heart, then quickly away. "Something about an injury with one of the dragons." Charlie looked back into my eyes and I swallowed, nodding.

I stepped forward, now hardly two feet between us, and I could've sworn his gaze flicked down to my lips. "I just need to fetch my bag."

Stepping around him, I didn't wait for a reply. I let my gently waving hair fall in front of my face, trying to hide the burning flush on my cheeks. I snatched the bag that held all of my medicines and treatments for the animals, which had been discarded by the door. I swung it over my shoulder and I opened the door.

"You have a beautiful voice, by the way," Charlie called as I stepped out. I didn't know if it was possible, but I'm sure my face turned even more red. My grip tightened on the leather strap of my bag and I quickened my pace to the dragon pins trying to ignore his steps behind me.

I was too aware of him behind me and I could feel his gaze burning my back. Or maybe that was just the sun.
