Mothman rummaged around your game collection before pulling out a brightly colored box you hadn't seen in ages.

"Candyland? I mean, it's simple enough, I think you'll understand it."

The moth chirped excitedly, raising his arms in the air in victory. Unfortunately, the contents of the box came spilling out as he did so. Realizing his mistake, Mothman's antennae flattened against his head dejectedly and he stopped down to clean up.

You let out a sigh, but realized there was no use in scolding the poor creature. He was just excited. "Don't worry about it, buddy. We'll just set up down here. You should get some time to get used to your new room anyways." You plopped down on the floor with your legs crossed.

The furry creature followed in suit and the two of you proceeded to set up the game. Mothman seemed fascinated by all of the artwork and colors. At least, you assumed it was the colors. Could he see those? You would have to ask. The game sort of depended on it. Pretty soon, everything was in its place.

"Have you played before?"

He quickly shook his head.

"Okay, didn't think so. It's pretty easy. You pink a little gingerbread guy and put him on the start end of the board." You picked up the purple game marker to demonstrate. Mothman mimicked you, selecting the red game piece. "Good. Now, your goal is to get to the candy kingdom at the end." You pointed to the picture at the top of the board, the moth's eyes following you. "And you do so by drawing a card. If you don't mind. I'll go first, and show you how it's done."

Mothman did not protest, so you drew the first card, a single red. You moved up a single space. "You move to the closest space with that color. If it had two squares on it, you would move up two spaces of that color. Here, you try."

Mothman reached out to grab a card, pulled it close to his face, and tilted his head in confusion. He flipped it around to show you.

"Oh, that kind of card is a little bit different. You get to move up to the matching symbol. Looks like you get to go all the way up to the candy cane place. Cool."

Your companion seemed delighted by this revelation, and happily moved his piece to the directed spot. You were glad to see Mothman enjoying himself. You figured that this was probably the most carefree fun he'd been able to have in years. You felt a smile creep up on your face.

The two of you went on taking turns for a few rounds, before you finally made it to the candy kingdom at the end. Mothman crossed his arms and lowered his antennae. He placed his game piece back at the start and looked at you with pleading eyes. Apparently he was a sore loser. You sighed and figured that there was nothing better to do. You just wished that you were sitting somewhere other than the hard floor.

"Fine, we can play one more time, but I might have to get a pillow. My butt is starting to hurt."

You started to look around the room for something to sit on when, to your surprise, you saw that Mothman's arms were wide open. When you didn't respond, he blinked and motioned for you to come closer.

"Are you offering me your lap?"

The moth nodded enthusiastically.

You let out a nervous laugh. "Oh, no, it's fine. I can find something else. Don't worry about it."

Mothman chirped, and clapped his fingers to the palms of his hands. He was being insistent. His face shone with nothing but pure intent. You decided to take him up on the offer to avoid causing offense.

"Alright. But I'm telling you, I can get a pillow."

You gingerly moved over to position yourself in the creature's lap, and realized just how odd this situation was. You were sitting in the lap of the cryptid your town was known for. A cryptid you didn't even know was real until a little bit ago. A cryptid who was now living with you. A cryptid who wanted to be your friend. Mothman proved to be a wonderful cuddle buddy. His fuzz was very warm, and the buzz that emanated from his body was oddly soothing. Despite the awkward maneuver to grab your card, you were very comfortable. For some reason, you felt heat run to your cheeks. Maybe you were getting too comfortable.

Another ten minutes passed by, and your body was rocked by a sudden jolt, as Mothman raised his arms in victory. He seemed satisfied to have finally won the game. As comfortable as you were, you weren't sure if you could stand another game of Candyland.

"Good job, bud. Do you maybe want to do something else now? It would probably be good if we got off of this floor."

He gave the board game one more glance before finally chirping with approval.

"I don't have a lot to offer, but I'm sure we can figure out something. Let's just cleanup first."
