After that endearing encounter, a less pleasant emotion set in – dread. While this morning was lighthearted and fun, you still had some responsibilities to attend. For starters, your house needed cleaned something awful. Before Mothman decided to unexpectedly become your roommate, you had plans to actually clean your house for the first time in weeks. You had accomplished some organizing, but there were some chores that simply could not be ignored. You didn't want to disappoint Mothman, but you figured that he would find some way to occupy himself.
"Hey, bud, will you be okay if I do some chores around the house? I need to vacuum and do some laundry. It shouldn't take too long. Can you stay out of trouble?"
The fuzzy creature in front of you nodded dutifully. He quickly scribbled on his notepad, "I will b gud. Draw birds."
You grinned. "Okay, sounds good. I'll let you know if I find any more pens or something so you have more stuff to draw with. Thanks for being a good sport." You have him a pat on the back before heading to your bedroom to face the massive laundry pile.
There was more noise coming from the living room than you expected. Even over the sound of the washing machine, you could hear various hums and chirps, occasionally accepted by thumping. Part of you was curious, but the other part of you was too focused on what you were doing and too scared about what you would find out. Once you were done with laundry, you returned to the living room to see Mothman standing up, moving in what appeared to be some sort of dance. You lifted an eyebrow. "Having fun in there?"
He left out an embarrassed chirp and flattened his antennae to his head. His eyes shot to the ground and he turned his back to you.
"Hey, I'm sorry. I was just teasing. I didn't mean to embarrass you. I've got to go vacuum anyway. I'll leave you alone and let you dance. Just have some fun." You have the creature a smile, hoping you didn't upset him too much.
Mothman bent over to pick up the notebook and quickly scribbled something down for you. "Secrit. Not rede yet."
"Oh, okay. Well, I didn't really see anything. I'll leave you to it." Your eyes wandered down to the dusty spot where Mothman had been sitting and You got an idea. "Actually, do you mind if I sweep in here first? It will be really quick, and then you'll have at least fifteen minutes to yourself afterwards."
Mothman nodded and picked up his things from the floor while you retrieved the vacuum from the closet. When you plugged the machine in, however, things did not go as expected. Upon hearing the loud vacuum sound, Mothman let out a shrill chirp and jumped on top of the couch. His reaction was more akin to a frightened cat than a seven foot tall cryptid. You immediately turned the vacuum off.
"Are you okay? It's just a vacuum. It's not going to hurt you. All it does is suck up dust!"
Mothman did not seem too convinced, as he remained on top of the couch practically shaking. You felt bad for him, but you couldn't not vacuum your house forever. Maybe a compromise could be made.
"Why don't you go in your bedroom and shut the door. I'll do this as quick as possible. I'll just go in the living room and hallway. I won't even worry about our rooms. Is that okay?"
Still weary, Mothman made a very slow descent off of the couch. As soon as his feet hit the floor, he skittered down the hall and into the spare room. As soon as you heard the door shut, you resumed your chores as normal. This roommate thing might be more difficult than you initially thought, but it was still worth it.
After a few minutes, you finished your vacuuming and figured you'd go check on your frightened friend. Opening the bedroom door, you saw that Mothman had reduced himself to a lump under the blankets on the bed. Shocked that he was that scared, you felt guilt well up within you as you rushed to his side.
"Hey, buddy, are you doing okay in there?"
The lump shook its head and you frowned.
"You can come out, it's gone now. You're safe. You're always going to be safe with me."
Mothman rolled over and peeked his head out from under the blankets. His antennae were down, and you could tell there was fear in those big red eyes. You felt bad for causing this much distress and opened your arms. "Will a hug make it better?"
The moth gave a slow nod, slowly emerging from the blankets further. You situated yourself on the bed and gave the exposed portion of his torso a hug, still not getting over how soft the creature was. Even more surprising was the fact that Mothman seemed to be instantly more at ease. The tension in his muscles released and his antennae lifted slowly. Without much thought, your hand found its way into the fur on his head, giving him soothing pets.
"It's all going to be okay. You're safe with me. I'd never put you in danger, I promise. I won't let anything happen to you, okay? I care about you too much."
You thought about those last words. You did, in fact, care about the creature more than you logically should. Despite being nearly strangers, save for a few weird encounters, you let this being into your home to potentially share a life with you. This thought plagued you throughout most of the day, but you were starting to come to terms with it. As Mothman lie in your arms, trusting you despite all that humans had out him through, you realized that there was nothing to worry about. You cared about this silly moth, and that was alright.
