He walks to the far end of the hall, center, where he's been told to go. His companions buzz around him, unchararcteristically excited. They know what's going on. There's also a serious undertone to the talking. It's a promotion, he decides, or some other great honor. Strangely enough, his mind isn't on task. Ever since he got back from that last assignment, his thoughts had been wondering...
The doors of the great hall open. Armed guards walk in, in a tight circle. Beside them are his two superiors. His sensitive ears pick up nothing from the center of the guards' circle. Absolutely nothing.
The sick feeling spreads inside him again. The circle walks closer, and the two men beside him walk ahead, his old Strategy teacher handing him a sword. They stand beside him, straight and still.
The circle of guards opens up, forming a straight line and pointing their swords at the figure's back, but, arms clasped behind her, feet still and staring defiantly ahead, Thanatos does nothing.
"She's yours." His teacher leans in to say to him. "To kill or do with what you please."
The tightening in her shoulders tells him she heard the remark. He fights to keep his expression neutral as one of the guards, his friend Váli, forces her to kneel in front of him, first by trying to push her shoulders down, then by savagely kicking her knees. Outside he is ice, a calm, unmovable glacier. But inside fire threatens to consume him as he is suddenly gripped by an urge to run Váli through with his sword.
What are you thinking? He berates himself. He's your best friend.
He looks down at her. .Another one of the guards has his hand on her head, pressing down so she can't look him in the eye. Her black hair falls down around her like a shield, and he can see her trembling with rage.
He is cold. There's a stone inside his chest, preventing him from moving or speaking into the stark silence.
Looking at the sword in his hands gives him an idea. He takes the one at his side and lets the first fall from his grip. As he expected, her head jerks immediately, taking in the opportunity on the ground, calculating her chances.
Silently, he nods to the guard holding her head down, and the rest of the guards step back, sensing what he has in mind. The crowd mutters, tense. After a hestitant second, the last guard steps back too.
Immediately, Thanatos sweeps up the sword and attacks.
