*Thanatos PoV*
I sweep the sword under him, but he jumps up, so I turn and stand, bringing the sword down on his head. His sword is there to block my strike, but he didn't anticipate the force of the blow and his arms bend under the weight. I move forward and press back in one motion, forcing him to turn. Now his back is toward the gates, and the crowd is behind me. My fury overrides the caution I might have had at this potential danger, my attacks fast and focused on driving the sword through his heart.
The minute I realize it, another thought, this one cold and tactical, whispers through ther red haze. If I kill him, they'll kill me. But if I take him hostage...
It's not a question of ability. But my angry, emotional self loathes the logic of it. Every second he breathes is a blow to my pride.
But the Command forbade me to take foolish risks.
I falter. He attacks and I block it. I stumble back and he follows quickly. I see my chance. Sensing my reluctance, my body acts for me, disarming him and at the same time pulling him toward me. I snap out of it, using his moment of confusion to lock my free arm around his neck and place the blade at his throat.
Just barely realizing what I've done, the hall falls into a hush. I feel him breathe, the pulse in his throat beat, and have to use all of my willpower to stop myself from loping his head off.
"I go free!" I shout so everyone will hear me, and curse the hoarseness in my voice. "I go free or he dies."
