Maya lay down on her bed and put on her headphones. She closed her eyes and nodded to the music. Her family was on vacation from New York. She hated vacation. In the summer, the worst thing that could happen is your parents dragging you to some boring island. Her friends Sophie and Mat might be going out to the mall or anything. Anything was better than vacation. She slowly drifted off, but then a sound exploded into the dark night. Maya sat up. The ship creaked, it was wobbling more than usual.  Then the alarm sounded. Her parents came into the room and yelled and shouted. The ship was sinking. Maya stuffed all her belongings into a pack. The ship slowly tilted. Maya could hear the waves pounding on the deck. Her parents burst threw the door. Outside was a crowd of people all holding cases with worried looks on their faces. Then another boom sounded. In an instant, the ship plunged into the cold, salty sea. Her parents shocked faces was the last thing she saw before disappearing into darkness.
