Here I am. In a taxi. Going home after 2 years at military school, then 3 years deployed in Afghanistan. It hurts. When people thank you.
I give the credit to my brothers who never came back with me.
My best friend Brent was one of them. I met him on the first day at the camp.
My best friend. Now he's dead.
I miss him. I miss camp. I even miss my Sargent.
We arrived.
I walk up to the house and knock on the door.
My brother Caleb answers.
"Oh my god! Your home!!!!"
"I'm home Cale. I'm home...." I say softly as he hugs me so hard.
"Where's everyone else?" I question
"At Matt's football game. Want to surprise them?" He asks
"Yes... Yes I do!" I scream
He grabs his keys as I adjust my camo cap and my suit.
"I'm ready sis."
We jump into his truck and drive to the game.
He parks in the front.
I jump out and start running in the little stadium and stand by the bleachers.
My brother Matt is the quarterback of the bears.
The game starts and he gets into position and as he's screaming he pauses and looks at me.
He stands up straight takes off his helmet and looks at me like I have 3 heads.
"No way.... no no no way." He announces
Everyone stares at him from the bleachers cluelessly.
He opens his arms signaling for me to go hug him.
The players behind him are so confused.
"Hey! I'm talking to you get your skinny ass over here and give me a hug so I can play the game!" He screamed across the field.
I start walking up to him and start to adjust my camo hat and stop the sweat from bouncing off my suit.
I walk up to him face to face and salute him.
"Seriously?!? Haven't seen your brother in 5 years and you give him a salute!!??" He screams
"Sorry I don't give hugs anymore Matt." I say sarcastically.
"Play the game dear brother. Use the power move I taught you." I say.
"Hey! Reed. Get this idiot off the field! I want to play!" This guy on the opposing team screams.
"Shit dude you better wish you were never born" my brother says.
I walk over to the boy who screamed that and said "That's not how you treat a marine after spending 3 years in Afghanistan protecting your ass!" "Now you may play you ungrateful jerk!".
