"I just heard a scream, and I saw Misty being dragged into a van." I tried explaining to the authorities. Between my clogged throat, choked up voice, and sobs I can imagine that the detective didn't catch a word I was saying.
I couldn't hold back the tears, as I called Misty's brother Cole. Cole and Misty used to be really close until he moved out. They haven't spoke recently, but he is still the closet person Misty has to a real family. With her father who abandoned the family, and a mother who is never around, Misty really needs her brother right now.
"Hello?" Cole picks up the phone. "This is Blaze," I make out between sobs. "Misty has been kidnapped." I say choking back tears, afraid of what might happen next. "I'll be there asap." Cole says after a long pause, before hanging up the phone. Before I could count to one hundred Cole was by my side. "Miss, I understand this is difficult for you, but I need the details. Did you see what vehicle Misty was dragged into, or any familiar faces?" Cole shoots a glare at the detective.
"Back off!" Cole yells at the detective "can't you see she is shaken up?"
The detective looks taken aback at Cole's sudden outburst.
"I-its ok," I manage to choke out.
He nods at me then looks at Cole for approval.
Cole gives him a curt nod and the detective starts back up with the questions.
"Alright, let's call it a night."
The detective finally said after two hours of questioning.
He drove away in his car, and now that I had no more questions to answer the real sobbing started.
Cole came over and attempted to pacify me but I kept crying harder.
"Why is this happening?" I asked Cole between sobs.
"I don't know." he answered me, sadness creeping into his voice.
"What will happen if we don't find her?" I questioned.
"Let's not think about that." Cole said looking me straight in the eye.
I walked over to where my parents were standing and asked them if we could go home.
On our way out I said goodbye to Misty's teary eyed mother, her surprisingly bored boyfriend, and Cole.
We drove all the way home in silence
When we got to my house I ran up the stairs, locked the door, and went to bed. I woke up in cold sweats and screaming at the top of my lungs.
My mom started frantically knocking on the door so I unlocked it and let her in.
"Why were you screaming?" My mom asked panic evident in her voice.
"Sorry, i just had a really bad dream," I answered her apologetically.
"That's ok honey, you've had a bad day that's all," she answered me smiling, but even I could tell that she was shaken up about this whole ordeal.
After she left I couldn't fall back asleep.
I kept thinking about that dream.
Misty was falling and I could do nothing to help her.
I shook off the thought, and hopped in the shower.
Hot water helps me think.
I was wringing my wet hair in my towel as I glanced at my bedside alarm clock, 5:58, the clock read.
School ended last week, so I should still be sleeping.
I don't start work until 8:00 at Bonnie's. Bonnie's is the local coffee shop and cafe, meaning free coffee and donuts for life! (Or as long as I work there.)
Bonnie is like Misty and I's seconds mother. How am I going to tell her about Misty's kidnapping?
I have ranks constant surge of guilt inside of me, that I could have done something to save Misty.
I tried to shake off as I headed downstairs. "Creek!" The stairs sounded louder than usual and the living room was dark as night. I'm surprised to not see anyone at the at the dinner table eating breakfast. The coffee machine isn't running and I don't hear the water going upstairs. I felt a cold wisp of wind approach my face, as I saw the window open.
I hold my breath and hide behind the couch. Being afraid of the dark is one thing, but being in the dark with the unknown is another.
I was startled as the window slammed abruptly.
I peeked out from around the couch and all was calm.
I crept up to the window and saw a note on the silk. It was balanced perfectly in a strange manner.
I was curious about what the note read, but my first priority was finding the light switch.
I grope the wall uncertainly, searching for the light switch. Finally, I find it and flip it on.
I take a short glance at the note, not sure what to think.
I made my way back to the window sill, and snatched up the not with a grasp so tight, my fingers were starting to loose their feeling.
I skipped upstairs rather quickly, and hopped onto my bed.
That's when I saw the words that would forever haunt me until the day I die.
