The results for the end-of-term exams came out quickly, and the hard work of both Yi Ran and Song Yu Meng paid off. Their ranking immediately improved by around 100 spots.

The two of them had finally tasted the fruits of their labor, and remembering their promise to enter C University together, they stuck together every day of the summer break. If they weren't revising their schoolwork, they were flirting and fooling around. It was tough, but also sweet. The two of them never got tired of feeling like this.

One afternoon, Yi Ran was carrying her school bag, and on the way, to revise with Song Yu Meng.

She knocked on the door and opened it, habitually greeting Mr. and Mrs. Song.

"Hello uncle, hello aunty. I'll be heading up first." She pointed upwards.

Mr. Song was sitting on the sofa in the living room and reading the papers. He put the newspaper down when he saw Yi Ran had arrived and asked kindly: "Studying with Xiao-Yu again?"

"Yeah, we haven't finished the homework for summer break yet. There's also a lot of stuff we need to revise from the first and second year. It's more efficient for both of us to study together."

"I heard from Xiao-Yu that you two are planning to get into C University together?"

Yi Ran nodded. "Mm, we agreed we'll attend the same university."

Mr. Song smiled happily. "Haha, that's good. C University is a good school. Xiao-Yu mentioned that she wanted to try for it before, but her grades then......"

Were unspeakable.

Mr.sw' Song didn't continue either. He stood up and patted Yi Ran's shoulder. "But now that you're working hard with her, I believe you two will be able to make your dream of going to the same school come true."

He said affectionately: "I only have this one darling daughter. I'm not expecting her to accomplish anything major, I just want her to be happy and safe."

Looking at Yi Ran, he said: "Xiao-Yu really likes you. Maybe sometimes she refuses to say what she means, maybe she'll be unreasonable, but her feelings for you cannot be any truer. I believe your feelings for her are genuine too."

Yi Ran nodded. "I will treat her well."

"That's good. Xiao-Yu has been spoiled by us since young, please be more patient with her."
"Don't worry uncle, I will."

Mr. Song patted Yi Ran's shoulder and smiled. "Then uncle can rest assured and hand her over to you. As for your dad, uncle will help put in a few words."

Yi Ran hastily bowed and thanked him. "Thank you for taking the trouble, uncle."

"It's alright. Go on up, Xiao-Yu has been waiting for a while."

Yi Ran headed up the stairs to Song Yu Meng's room and opened the door with a practiced hand.

Song Yu Meng had been waiting in the room for a while and seeing Yi Ran finally arrive, she threw down her pen and rushed into her arms, whining: "You're two minutes late. We said 9am sharp. Tell me, what were you doing with these two minutes?"

Yi Ran lowered her head and looked at her, replying tenderly: "We have the whole afternoon, why do you need to be so calculative over two minutes?"

Song Yu Meng pouted, clearly unhappy with her answer.

"Don't be annoyed." Yi Ran used her fingers to smooth out Song Yu Meng's lips and explained. "I was talking to your dad just now, that's why I'm late."
Raising an eyebrow, Song Yu Meng asked: "What did you and my dad talk about?"

"Your dad said he's happy we're trying to get into C University together, and that he'll rest assured handing you over to me. He even asked me to be patient with you and your temper."

Song Yu Meng laughed and tugged Yi Ran by the hand to sit at the desk. "Don't waste time, hurry up and explain these to me. Yesterday we were studying up to the geometry questions......"

"Okay."

The sun got higher and higher in the sky, and the two of them decided to take a break.

Yi Ran had been speaking for over an hour and her throat felt like it was on fire. Song Yu Meng brought a bottle of water for her and watched as Yi Ran tilted her head back to drink.

As if she had something to say.

Yi Ran capped the bottle and raised an eyebrow. "Why are you looking at me like that? If you have something to say, just say it. We've been together for two months, what could you be embarrassed about?"

"It's not that......" Song Yu Meng mumbled.
"Then what is it?"

"I'm just worried you might be upset."

"What on earth is it? Don't be so mysterious?" Yi Ran laughed.

Song Yu Meng lowered her head, a downfallen expression appearing on her face.

"A distant relative passed away, and my family needs to go attend his funeral."

Hearing those words, Yi Ran scratched her head in confusion. "That's it?"

"Mm."

Yi Ran found it funny. "Why would I be unhappy because your distant relative passed away?"

Song Yu Meng thought Yi Ran was super silly, she couldn't understand Song Yu Meng's unspoken meaning.

"Because we won't be able to see each other for days!" She said. "This distant relative stays in the countryside. We'll have to go out of the city to stay there for a while, and we're leaving tonight."

The more Song Yu Meng said, the more upset she got. With tears welling up in her eyes, she threw herself into Yi Ran's arms.

"Yi Ran, I can't bear to be apart from you...... I don't want to be away from you for so long, I'll miss you......"
Her voice was shaking, and her tears fell, dripping onto Yi Ran's clothes.

Yi Ran saw her girlfriend crying in her arms and she felt her heart ache.

Quickly taking some tissue to wipe away her tears, Yi Ran coaxed her patiently and gently. "What are you crying for, dummy? It's just a few days, not as if we won't ever see each other again."

Song Yu Meng started crying even fiercer, hugging Yi Ran and accidentally rubbing her tears and snot onto Yi Ran's shirt.

"But I don't want to be away from you for even a second!" She complained. "I really like you; I don't want to be apart from you......"

Yi Ran felt touched and smiled, gently patting her head. "I know you like me, and you don't want to be apart, but you still have to go to these sorts of things. Just bear with it for a few days, and we can always video call, right?"

Song Yu Meng clapped her hands on both of Yi Ran's cheeks, saying in a soft voice: "Then you must remember to miss me! You have to call me at least three times a day, morning, afternoon and night. Every call can't be shorter than an hour, and there can't be more than an hour between calls too!"
Counting like this, there must be at least 12 calls a day. Anybody else would have felt this request was absurd, but Yi Ran thought her girlfriend's stickiness was adorable.

"Okay-- I promise all of that." Her tone was so indulgent and gentle.

Song Yu Meng really didn't want to leave Yi Ran at all. At night when she was about to get in the car with her parents, she hugged Yi Ran for a long time before unwillingly leaving.

Yi Ran originally thought that video calls would be fine if they couldn't meet, but when they called for the first time after Song Yu Meng left, she realized that the real person and the person in the video call are completely different.

The real person could be hugged, but the person in the video call was behind the screen. Even if you could see her face, you couldn't touch her or hug her. The longing came like waves inside Yi Ran's heart.

"Yi Ran, I reached my relative's house, look." Song Yu Meng held her phone away from her and spun in a circle, showing her surroundings to Yi Ran.
It was the typical house in the village, and the room seemed well decorated. It was just that since Song Yu Meng had never stayed in a village before, it was new to her.

"Tonight, I'll be in this room. My parents are in the room beside me." Song Yu Meng reported every detail and finally lied on the soft bed after showing Yi Ran the room.

Yi Ran sprawled out on her bed with her phone too, hearing clanging and metallic crashes from Song Yu Meng's end. "Why is it so noisy over there? Have they started the funeral rites?"

"Mm, my dad said it'll be this noisy the whole night. Seems like I won't be able to sleep."

The two of them spoke from 8PM all the way to 10PM.

At 10PM, the night sky over the village was filled with stars, and the bright and round moon was hanging in the sky.

Song Yu Meng went out onto the balcony and raised her hands, pointing the camera to the sky and letting Yi Ran see it.

"Yi Ran, take a look. The sky out here is beautiful, isn't it?" Song Yu Meng said excitedly. "Those stars are so pretty, and the moon is rounder than what we see in the city. Can you see it?"
"I see it." Yi Ran smiled. "Song Yu Meng, guess what I'm doing now?"

"What? Are you missing me?"

Yi Ran smiled. "Yeah, I'm missing you. Looking at the same night sky as you, I really miss you."

Song Yu Meng was actually quite happy looking at the night sky, but Yi Ran's words awoke the longing in her heart.

She started feeling incredibly saddened, like her relatives downstairs. But it was because she was unable to see Yi Ran, while her relatives were sad because of the passing of their family member.

Song Yu Meng flipped it back to the front camera and aimed it at herself. She saw Yi Ran's face, full of longing.

"Yi Ran...... I miss you, what should we do......" She choked on a sob, tears gathering in her eyes. "I want to hug you. I'm scared of these kinds of stuff, if only you were by my side....."

That pitiful expression, Song Yu Meng thought of Yi Ran until she wanted to cry. Yi Ran suddenly felt as if a string snapped in her heart, and she only had one thought on her mind.
"Wait for me, I'll come over to you now."

Song Yu Meng sat up immediately, filled with surprise and joy. "Ah? You're coming to find me? Really?"

"Really. I'm coming over now. Send me your location."

Yi Ran's tone was calm but firm, she wasn't joking. Song Yu Meng was so emotional she almost forgot how to send her location, only finding the button after a while.

They were a hundred kilometers apart.

Yi Ran bought a train ticket to the town for 10.30PM. She had to rush to the station in half an hour. She turned off her phone and threw a jacket on, rushing out of her room.

Mr. Yi was in the living room, and seeing his daughter hurriedly rush down the stairs, he asked suspiciously: "Where are you heading to in such a rush?"

Yi Ran's face was filled with anxiety. "I'm taking a train to see Song Yu Meng, it's almost too late to make it.

"Hold on, I have something to say."

Yi Ran paused. "What?" She had pretty much guessed it. "It's about me and Song Yu Meng, right?"
"Mm, I spoke to old Song earlier in the afternoon about it."

"Then do you agree?"

Mr. Yi sighed. "With you two being as lovey-dovey as you are, I can only agree."

He patted Yi Ran's shoulder. "Go look for her. Be safe and take care on the way."

Yi Ran smiled and nodded. "Okay."

The wind blew past outside the window on this midsummer night, and the train's wheels rattled against the tracks, masking the chirping of the cicadas.

Yi Ran leaned her head gently against the window, staring outside with a slight smile.

It was both crazy and romantic to ditch everything in the middle of the night to ride a train towards a village a hundred kilometers away.
