The Procedures

Be strong Newsam.... be strong! An inner voice within my head was willing me to go on. I had the training and I had the knowledge, all I had to do was apply it. The situation was confusing me. I was unsure of what was reality and what was fiction. The views from outside the aircraft remained the same however, inside the aircraft the view was a different situation. More warning lights had appeared on the control pannel to warn myself and Captain Hamilton that our altimeter was decreasing rapidly. Time was not on our side. We had to make it.

The passengers, at this stage, were still blissfully unaware of the developing situation. A few people were more cautious within the cabin. The vibrations from the engines had lowered and the noise had stopped dead. Silence filled the airframe. A few glances were shot around, but no-one made a move. Surely what could happen on a routine flight? Many passengers onboard had flown this route before on business and nothing had been out of the ordinary. An old couple seated over the wings were holding hands a little tighter than before. Her husband had always been a nervous flyer and needed reasurrance. The flight attendants had visited him several times during the flight to make sure that he was comfortable, in which he always replied with the answer of "I am."

The cockpit was also silent. I was waiting for the right moment to ask whether I should announce our current position and situation to the aprehensive passengers. Captain Hamilton was busy altering the planes flaps, so that we could buy more time. Time was essential. We needed all that we could get. Seconds were crucial. I knew that we wouldn't be given hours however, I secretly prayed for a miracle. Was anyone watching down on us at this stage. It felt like we were the only ones up in the blue atmosphere. It was deathly silent... we made no noise... no-one could hear our struggle. It was as though our aeroplane was placed inside a vacuum where no air particles were present to create any sound.

It was Captain Hamilton, myself and the passengers. Just us...
