Needing that job

A man runs across the street, narrowly misses getting hit by a taxi cab. He seems to be in quite a rush.

He stops in front of a meter with a brown bag over it. "Meter broken" is written out and crossed off, with the words "nice try'' underneath it.

He stares at it, and then, in realization, grabs a ticket from his windshield.

"Ah." He walked around his car, ready to move on with his day, when he saw a boot on his tire.

He reached down and jiggled it, almost hoping it would come off, and not inconvenience him any longer.

He stands, and begins to jump and kick at it, his kicks eventually becoming ones of rage and annoyance.

The same man turns a corner, spotting a friend and calling his name.

"Hey, Blake."

The man stops his work on the building in front of him, and smiles, seeing who it was.

"Hey, Larry!"

The man, Larry, continues up to the man, asking how he is doing.

Before Blake can answer, Larry continues.

"Have you seen Nicky?

The man ponders this, before replying that he went home with Erica.

"It was half day today. Um, Parent Career day."

He gestures up, causing Larry to take a step back from the building, and seeing that there was a sign, stating exactly what he just said.

A doorbell rings, and a woman opens it. On the other side, we see Larry, who is welcomed in by the woman, Erica.

She closes the door, and sees that he is tense.

"You alright?"

"Yeah. Yeah, um," he turns to her. "Why didn't anybody tell me it was career day?"

She stands there confused.

"Wh-what do you mean? Nicky said he was gonna tell you."

"Oh. OK, I guess he forgot."

Another man enters the room.

"Uh-oh. There he is."

Larry acknowledges him with a 'hey'.

"How are you Larry?" He proceeds to drink the coffee in his hand while Larry responds.

"Good. How you doin' Don?"

The man, Don, responds that he is good as well, and the exchange seems very awkward.

To try and break the tension, Don remarks on the weather.

"Chilly, right? Chilly, chilly, chilly. Willy, the Penguin."

A phone goes off, a very weird ringtone, and Don is exasperated from the call.

He leaves, letting them know he will let Nicky know that Larry is here.

"Wow, your fiance really manages to squeeze a lot into that belt."

Erica whispers to stop it, and walks into another room.

"What?" Larry continues with his purposeful obliviousness.

They proceed into the kitchen, where the conversation turns to a concern for NIcky, as well as Larry's stability with his job and apartment.

Before the conversation can get much further, a child enters the dining room, and it is made clear that this is Nicky.

"Ready to carve it up?"

The child responds with cool.

A team of young hockey players are in the middle of a game, and Nicky goes for the puck. Before he can get far, he falls, and Larry, concerned for his son's health, jumps onto the ice.

Angering many parents, Larry talks with Nicky, and gives him some advice for the game when he learns he is unhurt.

Walking back to the sidelines, he tries to act cool, but not moving fast enough, he gets hit in the head with a puck, newly put back in play.

"Game o- Ow."

Larry and Nicky are walking along a pond, talking about the game earlier today.

After Larry suggests going pro as a joke, Nicky expresses that he doesn't want to be a hockey player anymore.

"Alright, what do you wanna be?"

"A bond trader." Nicky responds, knowingly referring to Don's job.

"He took me to his office last week."

"Uh-huh. That's cool."

Larry makes fun of his job, wondering where the shift came from.

"Come on, you love hockey."

"I still like it, but bond trading is my fallback."

"Your fallback? You're too young to have a fallback. OK, Nicky? Where did you even hear that word?"

"Mom was talking to Don about all your different schemes."

"She called them schemes?"

"She said it was time you found a fallback."

Nicky stops, and voices the question he has had for a bit.

"Are you really moving again?"

Larry stops as well, unsure of how to respond to his son's question.

"Uh, I don't know. We'll see. I mean, there's some pretty cool places out in Queens."

Nicky, dejected , is assured by Larry that his moment is coming, and that it's coming soon.

"What if you're wrong? What if you're just an ordinary man and should get a job?"

Again speechless from his son's words, he just says that they'll figure it out, and that they need to head back to his moms.
