Herding back all of the exhibits from the museum was interesting to say the least. There were many language barriers, as well as the people who got distracted very easily.
But in the end, everyone was back inside, and names were being recorded down to double confirm that nobody was missing.
I was unsure of what to do next. On the way back, Ahkmenrah had explained to me what had happened. That we had died, but since the tablet was with us, we were brought back to life every night.
It was something of a miracle.
Until he asked me how I died. It was painful to tell him that it was so soon after his death.
To be the one to deliver that your brother killed both you and your wife, well it was not fun.
Larry approaches me after everything settles down, and we stand before our coffins as Ahkmenrah translates back to me.
"Sorry, I know you guys want your alone time to catch up, I just, I had a question. I read different books and articles about you, and the historians could never agree on something. I guess I just wanted to know. To complete the story in my head I guess."
I smile as Ahk finishes, and nod for him to continue. I don't understand what he says, but it shocks Ahk to silence.
They exchange a few words, and Larry leaves, waving as he jogs out of the room.
"What was his question? Where is he going?"
"I told him he could get his answers tomorrow. First I wanted to know."
He moves his hands to my shoulders and looks me deep into my eyes. I was starting to get nervous, and he could see it plainly on my face.
"Sorry, I don't mean to scare you, I'm just afraid of your answer."
"Well then hurry up and ask, so that we may put it to rest."
He takes a deep breath, preparing himself for the hurt that might come.
" The night that we died, were you... with child?"
I stood there, shocked. I was still wrapping my head around the fact that our entire lives, however short they were, are on display for everyone to read about.
And it made sense why people would think so. I had a room prepared, and we were actively trying, but we were being careful either.
"I was not. I had the servants put together a nursery as a surprise for you, yes. But as a question to try. Not to tell you I was."
He relaxes, in both disappointment and relief. It would have been a shame to be pregnant, then killed before ever even knowing. But it was also something I know we both wanted. To have those milestones together, it was ours to have.
And it was stolen from us. By his brother. All for a throne. Ahkmenrah had wanted to see so much good in him, and in the end, it was repayed with death.
His brother hadn't even thought to spare me. It was something that had crossed my mind as I was trapped in the prison of a coffin. Would he had kept me alive and married me after killing his own brother?
I never would have gone along with it of course, and maybe that was why he didn't. He knew it wasn't worth the fight I would bring. It was easier to kill me there, rather than let me gain more favor with the people.
Ahk and I move to our coffins, and he helps me into mine. I was scared to go back in, but he was assured by Larry that we would be let out regularly now. There was a giant party going on in the lobby, but I was so tired.
Even now, being dead doesn't stop me from being socially drained. But I'm sure that there will be more parties to come in the future.
