Chapter One:

Iris P.o.v

***********

"Iris!" I hear Violet, my mother's shrill voice filling my ears. "WHY ARE YOU STILL NOT DRESSED YET! We are already late and we have so many preparations for the winter solstice before guests start arriving from all around" My mom starts going on her rant which i listen to while looking out the window now focusing on the girl staring back at me.

I always thought your reflection was supposed to be yourself but it can't be me. I know even if she feels like me, She doesn't look like me. The girl in the mirror and I only share one thing in common: our warm brown skin although hers is a shade lighter than mine. But that's it. She has a shoulder length mane of curly hair which is the color of fire. Which is so unusual because not many people are born with red hair anymore... especially that red. She has beautiful brown eyes with so much fire in them that she could set the world on fire. A perfect nose and pretty pink lips and if all of that isnt enough it always seems like she's taller than me!

I almost jumped out of my skin when I felt my mom's hand on my shoulder when I looked at her and her face was questioning.

"Did you not hear me Iris. I will not go say it again" She said and shooed me away from the window and into my room to put on the clothes she had set out for me.

The Winter solstice is my mothers favorite celebration and the fact that we are so close to the central city means that our normally quiet village is going to be booming with visitors soon. And my mother is one of the priestess and our villages best healer so there is a lot expected of her during these celebrations so she runs around like a fucking crazy woman till its over.

I sigh and roll my eyes after changing into my dress for the day. Its a bit tighter and fuller in certain places than I would pick but I know it's too late to try to change my mothers mind, there will be suitors and she will expect me to look and be on my best behavior.

Looking in the mirror I decide to run my wooden brush through my impossibly straight black waist length hair. It refuses to curl no matter how hard i try i look at my wide almond shaped eyes which are so dark they look black and decide that at least i got a good sleep last night so there's no dark circles that's One less thing for my mom to complain about.

And like I thought up the devil herself my mom was all of a sudden banging on my door. I looked in the mirror one more time and decided this was the best it was going to get and walked out my room this time ready to face the music of today.

Later That Day

---------------

"I'm going to need you to Mr.Arewells to pick up our clothes for tomorrow." My mother says as were finishing putting the decorations on the last of the trees

"Okay ill get Ren" I said starting to turn towards the area where the younger kids were cleaning up

"No by yourself" She stopped me

"But mom why cant Ren come with me its already starting to get dark and isnt it going to be heavy?" I asked her while looking around for him

"Because its getting entirely too cold out for him and I'm sure he's tired" she said, turning her back and grabbing the last of the boxes that previously contained the decorations.

I didn't argue with my mom or her reasoning. I mean I have been out here way longer than either of my siblings and it's gonna be a chest full of heavy garments since it is freezing outside! But that's just how it is and so I just started trudging the direction in as fast as a pace I could in the snow towards the direction of Mr.Arewell our village's tailor. Mom always goes all out every year and insists that we all have new clothes and they are all normally the same color and we normally have no say on what it even looks like.
