Hope the plot made you excited about the development of the story.
My story parts tend to be long, and the character development may sometimes seem stale, but it is intentional. I don't want the characters to feel like fictional ones created for the sole purpose of romance. I want them to feel realistic, as real as possible.
So I take time to develop their characters. I don't leave any character unattended. They may be inactive but will return at some point.
Please keep these in mind, and even if it takes time, try to read the story by splitting it into multiple sittings.
