Part I

Kim Minji straightened her back with a sigh, using her upper arm to brush a stray lock of hair behind her ear as she held a tray of macarons in her left hand. Normally, she had her jet-black locks tightly secured in a hair gel-coated bun, but today's busy schedule had left her with only enough time to sweep them up into a floral scrunchie before she rushed downstairs to her macaron shop early that morning.

Minji's alarm hadn't woken her the way it was supposed to, and she felt that the entire day had been incredibly hectic even though she didn't have any customers in the shop. All her orders were online ones, but they were big, and she knew she had to fill them as quickly as she could in order to stay on top of things.

It was a snowy and cold day in Seoul. Thick bunches of clouds had loomed in the sky until noon, when they finally began letting their store of icy precipitation fall to the ground. It started with a simple dusting, but Minji could see that it was now snowing harder. It was two o'clock in the afternoon, and she still had three more hours to go until her shop closed, but with the way her orders were still stacked up and no one was going to come by in person, Minji figured she might as well flip the "open" sign on the front door and focus on what needed to be done.

She was halfway to the glass entryway when a beautiful blonde, her hair tied in a side braid that was still intact but soaked from the damp weather, ran under the awning and made her freeze in place. Minji suddenly found herself wishing that the girl would come in.

"Oh, it's horrid out there," the blonde girl breathed, tucking her arms around her chest as she stood still on the welcome mat just inside the front door of Dreamcatcher Macarons. Her clothing was dripping, and it looked like she had only just noticed that as she shifted her weight from one foot to the other awkwardly.

Minji still hadn't spoken, her mouth half-opened in shock. She couldn't believe that her prayers had somehow been answered. The pretty girl, however, took it to mean that she had done something wrong. "Oh! I'm sorry for getting your floor all wet," she quickly apologized. "And – and I – I don't have any money with me, I – I just came in to get away from the snow. I-I'm sorry for bothering you, I'll leave now."

It all happened so fast that Minji was still frozen in place when the door closed behind the blushing blonde, who had ducked out of its glass sheath and stepped foot onto the slick sidewalk again, keeping her head down as she began hurrying away.

Minji's senses kicked in not a moment too late. "Wait!" she yelled as she threw open the door. The air outside was frigid and windy, and she worried that her voice wouldn't carry as far as it needed to, but it apparently did, because the blonde girl stopped and turned back with wide eyes. "I-I'm sorry. I just wasn't expecting anyone to come in, and you surprised me. Please, come inside."

"B-But I don't have any money with me," the girl reiterated in protest, but she followed Minji inside when she held the door open nonetheless.

"That's okay," Minji said softly, giving the girl a shy smile. "Pick what kind of macaron you'd like, and come sit at this table near the display case. I'm going to get something from the back, I won't be but a moment." As the girl bent over the glass case to inspect the sweet treats with a bright yet also shy smile, Minji brushed her hands on her apron and hurried to the small back room behind the counter to retrieve something from the hook on the door.
