Some things are simply out of your control.

Some things you couldn't always prevent.

Some things you wasn't allowed to do.

Mei had heard the shot long before she knew who was hit. The second everyone at the medical tents had heard the distinctive ringing of a bullet fired, they began making preparations to treat the injured. Just in case it was one of their own that had been shot. Even if it wasn't, this was war. Someone always got hurt.

It wasn't until Lord Masamune came running back to camp (or what constituted as running, in this case) with an injured Lord Kojuro on his shoulder did time begin to slow.

She knew there was nothing she could have done to prevent this. Her place was here, with the other medics and the wounded. Safe and out of harm's way. It was his place to take to the battlefield. To pick up the sword and fight the good fight, for the sake of his clan and all those it protected.

Mei stood still, lost in a daze as the other medics rushed to Lord Masamune. She could only hear bits and pieces of the conversation as Lord Kojuro was rushed into the closest tent.

Something about Lord Masamune being ambushed.

Something about Lord Kojuro taking a shot in his place.

Something about a sacrifice.

Mei turned around to see one of the other medics, a good friend if nothing more, looking at her with sadness in her eyes. She didn't say a word as she rushed into the tent to assist the others.

But Mei didn't move an inch.

She couldn't move.

All she could do was fall to her hands and knees, tears streaming down her cheeks like heavy rain as the reality of what happened had settled.

She didn't feel Lord Masamune pull her out of the dirt.

She didn't feel Lord Masamune wrap his arms around her.

She didn't hear the empty words spilling from his lips.

All she could feel was inadequate, and the sunken hole forming in her gut at the mere notion that she wasn't strong enough to protect who mattered most to her.
