To an average human, the window in my bedroom is just an average window. But, to me its more than that.

It’s a portal to the world and life I’ll never have.

My whole life I’ve longed to go outside, and be with average humans. I want to go to the place they call school and learn new things, I want to have friends and eat real food with them. I want a family that doesn’t shelter themselves in darkness and have never seen the light of day.

But no,  Sophia Evergreen will never be allowed outside. Even though I was born with the ability to not be harmed by the sun, my parents choose to keep me locked away.

My world is much different from those mortal’s who live and bask in the daylight. They go on their lives, taking for granted all the little things that I would do anything to have.

“Sophia!” my older sister called from downstairs “come downstairs sweetie, I have a surprise for you!”

My sister Carmela is your average blonde hair, big boob bimbo who always seems to be sinking her teeth into a different guy every night. She’s currently an alchemist searching for a cure to our… problem.

Well, I better tell you reader’s now so that your fully aware of our… situation.

My whole family is a race of vampires. We’ve originated from England, and moved to America after a tragedy happened in our family, but I’ll get back to that later.

I tucked a strand of my dark red hair that flowed down my back behind my ear as I slipped on my knee high black converse. My outfit consisted of my shoes, my ripped leggings, dark jean shorts, and a blood red tank top with black lace trim. I charged down the stairs into our windowless gothic dining room where my small family was gathered around the table.

Everyone was up during the day, not a good sign. “is something the matter?” I asked as my golden eyed relatives stared at me as if I was their pray. “-please- take a seat Sophia” my father beckoned for me to take the seat next to him at our dark wood dining table. My father; Daniel Dracula Evergreen is the high king of our immortal world. For every race in the supernatural world there is a king and a queen who run everything. They make sure that our rules are followed, our population stays at a stable level, and  most importantly; enforces the constant rule that human’s shall never know of our existence (except for some special agents in the government) . Any human who is told of us will become another one of my fathers loyal servants who will help him “enforce” his rules.

“your going to high school!” the sudden words coming from my sister snapped me back into the real world. I shook my head, thinking that I must’ve misheard her “excuse me?” I muttered “I’m sorry, did I hear you right?!” I looked down at Darkness who sat close to my feet wagging his tail. He nodded “we discussed it last night” his baby blue eyes sparkled.

“so, no more dweller academy?! No more going to sleep during the day, I actually get to sleep at night?!” mother and father nodded, smiling their white fangs “but, under one condition” my mother announced “you’ll be going under a different name and identity. You’re the princess so we cant risk any Raptures figuring out your there” she looked down at Darkness “your going to have to go with her” her golden eyes sparkled as she blew a kiss in his direction. Her magic flowed from her fingertips towards Darkness. He backed up a few inches from me startled by the magic jolt that flowed towards him. Mothers dark magic flowed through him making him yelp, scaring me.

“what did you do?” I yelled at her “please, don’t hurt him!” tears began flowing down my cheeks as I watched Darkness morph right in front of me. He was in pain, and my powers couldn’t help him. But in an instant, it was over and a teenage boy with a red necklace on with a cross attached sat next to me.

“Darkness?” I muttered whipping the tears from my cheeks. The boy looked surprisingly at his arms studying his every feature. He was lean, with a perfect six-pack, his hair was jet black and shaggy that flowed past his shoulders almost to the middle of his back. “don’t freak out darling Sophia, your dog’s curse has been… slightly lifted. When the sun is up he’ll take this human form to guard you from danger while your not at home. At night he’ll gain his dog form again” mother sipped on her tea/blood concoction as Reaper stood up.

Reaper, my older brother was a Dweller like my mother, Carmella, and Noah. His style was Goth like mine. He had tons of ear piercing that hid behind his black/ dark red highlighted hair, today he wore his panic at the disco shirt, and baggy black jeans (at home Reaper likes to go barefoot showing the black polish on his toes he allowed me to put on him while we watched his favorite movie interview with a vampire)

“come on mutt” he said to Darkness holding an hand “I’ll lend you come clothes” Darkness refused to take his hand slowly standing up by himself. His bright blue eyes sparkled as he looked at me for approval as If he was still a dog wanting to be praised. His black dog ears poked out from the top of his shaggy hair. I smiled stroking his head “you’ll be okay, Darkness. I promise you’ll make an awesome human”

When I was a baby, my fathers methods of punishment’s were different. Back then if you broke a really big rule you would be cursed with black magic to forever be an animal of his choosing. Darkness was chosen out of many of the cursed to serve as my protector. And in return, when I was married and no longer needed protecting, the curse would be lifted. Darkness was the name I gave him, so I have no idea what his name was before the curse. He didn’t mind, as long as he knew one day he would be human again.

We’re really good friends, Darkness knows everything about me down to what shoe I slip on first.

“Sof this is stupid” Darkness finally huffed throwing my copy of ‘how to survive high school’ across my room. “hey, don’t get mad at me! The bookstore clerk told me this was the best book to prepare us for high school!” I snapped back holding my own copy. He crossed his arms over his bare chest. Darkness only agreed to wear boxers and black baggy pants until we went to school. “its not the book that’s stupid, it’s the repulsive social standings that mortal’s seem to think are necessary” I shook my head “but think about it like that, it says in the book that you should make friends of people who appreciate you for who you are, These people will make you feel better about life, and help get you through school”

Darkness shook his head lying his head on my lap like he did when he still had his dog form. He let out a low whimper as I began stroking his hair “I don’t need friends, all I need is…” he let out a yawn as his eyes began fluttering close “you” he whispered snuggling closer. No matter what, dog form or not. He’s still my loving Darkness. My dog that’s been my only friend since I was a child. I pulled his sleeping body up my bed resting his head on my pillow. I slid off slowly, pulling my hot pink and black spider web covers over him. I sat on the edge of my bed, my fingers brushing slowly through his long locks. He skin was a beautiful pale that seemed to glow as he slept. Darkness could be a gothic model, he wouldn’t have any trouble fitting in with the gothic kids.

I glazed over at my cupcake wall clock realizing that Darkness only had two hours before it was night time and he would return to his dog form. I looked back at his sleeping face, I smiled. “I know your scared” I whispered knowing he couldn’t hear me, but kind of hoped he could. “but don’t worry, ‘cause I am too” I sighed slipping off my knee high converse revealing my ‘I heart my dog’ socks. I pulled the covers over me facing my back towards Darkness. I flipped my zombie lamp off watching as my automatic curtains began pulling themselves close. Darkness let out a yawn as he threw his arm around me pulling me close like a stuffed animal. I closed my eyes allowing myself to pretend for a moment that I was a normal teenage girl lying next to her protective boyfriend. But, I’ve never really thought of Darkness that way. He’s always been… well… a pet. Nothing more, nothing less. But, who knows what the future holds for us tomorrow as we enter the front doors of Moonlight High.

My whole life, the things I’ve known  about the outside world were things I read in books, and watched in movies. The outside world always felt like a forbidden book that I was never allowed to open. But, tomorrow im going to do it, I’m starting the next big chapter of my life.

This is it. The life that I’ve always wanted.
