"Now!" The commander yelled as he walked through the sliding door to the circular room.
Quite a few fellow watchdogs jolted up at the sudden yell, waking abruptly from their little nap.
You were the only one who seemed to display any kind of enthusiasm, except for the shorter watchdog that you recognised as Westley. Although he had some trouble seeing past the table, he looked as if he was actually concentrating.
The commander marched along the line of filled seats until he came to the front where a projector shone blankly on the front wall.
He cleared his throat and continued in his usual high-pitched shout.
"—We all know that this 'Wandering weirdo' has been causing us issues lately, and I will not stand by whist he and that Zbornak accomplice foil our plans for galactic domination! We must use all the recourses at our disposal to guarantee that we don't fail in the next upcoming planetary takeover!"
He looked around at all the new faces at the table and made a small sighing sound.
"I am aware that some of you are not familiar with this routine so I'll put it simply: these creatures—"
He pressed a button on the remote that he was holding in his gloved hand, causing the blank screen projected on the wall to show up an orange spoon-like creature and a purple dinosaur with a pinkish mane.
Their faces had been childishly scribbled over with black marker pen. You fought the urge to roll your eye as a huge sigh swept across the table.
"—are our 2nd priority! Since day one, they've been tormenting Lord Hater and using his short temper against us!
Every time we go into the surface of any planet, he ends up chasing after them instead of conquering more planets!
Ever since their arrival, Lord Hater has been falling behind on the evil leaderboard and your mission is to ensure that it doesn't fall any further!
Your job is to make sure that the invasions go as planned and that we capture and lock away that wandering weirdo for good!"
He stomped his foot angrily on the table, now standing on it and looking down on everyone that stared at him.
He paced the length of the table, making a small humming noise as he paced before he turned quickly to meet your eye and pointed at you accusingly.
"You! Give me a plan to deal with this puny protagonist!"
You exhaled cooly, having already a plan in mind. Although you didn't know much about the enemies themselves, you've only just read the simplified information booklet from your quarters and yet you believed you had the answer.
Well, half of an answer...more of a draft, really.
You gulped down your fear and looked up at your commander with a nervous eye.
"What if we lured the small one by himself into a building that's completely sealed with no visible exit, leaving his associate by herself.
She looks stronger and more difficult to handle but if we kept one apart from the other then blackmailed the big one into submission..."
You paused, looking up at the commander who looked down on you with an unreadable expression.
Then...he laughed.
It was short and high-pitched but somehow played a part in quietening his voice."I see you must be one of the new recruits, what's your name soldier?"
"Y/n, sir."
"Well, y/n, it seems that, although the idea could use a little sanding round the edges, it might sound a little more like a plan worth the risk. I take it that you've read the manual I wrote the day before?"
"Yes sir."
"At least someone's informed!" He scoffed towards the crowd of eager eyes that stared at you with strong curiosity and awe.
A sudden wave of pride hit you and you half-smiled with your eye. He had recognised your greatness! The commander himself!
He straightened himself upright and began to walk slowly back to his seat.
"Maybe if you could all follow the rookie's example, we'd have less problems abroad this ship than necessary.
Ahem! We will discuss my new plan for next attack on the planet 'Xovoth' (pronounced 'zovoth') in less than a week, you will resume your regular duties as follows-and y/n will be shadowing me as the next leading watchdog strategist! Session dismissed!"As soon as the commander announced it, the watchdogs scattered and bolted for the exit, glad to enjoy a nice meal after a long, hard day of listening to their boss.
Unsurprisingly, Westley caught up with you on your way out.
"Hey y/n! Did you see the look on the commander's face? He totally thought your plan was the coolest!"
You gave the little guy a big smile and looked down at your feet.
"Aw, I don't know, he did mention that it needed work to 'smooth out the edges' as he so delicately put it. The idea was really sketchy and just came at the top of my head, I think he pretended to like it because I'm a newbie-"
He suddenly halted and grabbed me by the lower arm (since he could only reach that far lol) with a serious look in his eye.
"Look y/n, I've been on this ship for several years and, well, until now, I've never seen the Commander look so shocked. I think that what you said really showed how strategic you can be under pressure, which is a really important trait that's required for someone in your position!"
You wanted to hug this little guy then and there but the crowds of watchdogs from behind provoked you to start walking again. Instead, you looked down at him happily then waved as you came to your dorm room.
"Thank you Westley, you're the best."
"I know I am, put in a good word for me when you see the commander tomorrow!"
"I sure will bud!" You called out as he disappeared amongst the crowd of much taller, less enthusiastic watchdogs.
You sighed with a smile as you sat on your bed in your quarters.
Tomorrow was another day, and you were to 'shadow' the commander as the leading strategist.
