The Orchard

The sweet smell of apple blossom filled the air as i walked along the neat but well beaten path to my orchard.Through the lush fields filled with livestock and crops all green and not yet ready for harvest. As i reached the gate i stopped briefly and bent down to lift up a rock underneath which a small key sat innocently which i picked up and slotted into the lock. The gate was ornate and beautiful, made of weathered iron and painted black, it told stories of birds, fair maidens and foxes. The gate swung open gently, allowing me to pass through, and then it shut itself with a soft clang. I strolled forwards through the neatly planted apple trees, savouring the fresh air and the soft crunch of grass underfoot mixed with the soft chirping of birds.

After a while I came to a tree that seemed to cower before the others, not having got enough sunlight. I set down the large bag I'd been carrying and unzipped it. My slender fingers reached past the large plastic bags filled with assorted limbs, to the shovel next to them.As I set to work digging a hole large enough for the fertiliser i spoke to the tree, assuring it that it would soon be just as big as the others.

I finished packing the earth back into the hole, having tipped the bodies in and put the bags back into my bag. I looked up at what I could see of the sky and saw it was now sun down. I sighed and took in the wonderful paradise I had been tending to single handedly for seven years now. Decades of my family and now me. Centuries of bodies buried here and yet I am the one who's contributed the most. And I plan on contributing even more until my death, and then someone else will carry on our great legacy...
