Wild Swimming

The sky was unusually brighter than would be expected for this late hour, tinted with greens and blues as if someone had carelessly spilt ink over the plain canvas of the sky, softly illuminating the dirt path underneath my bare feet. The rough linen of my dress trailed behind me appearing as if the ink in the sky had bled into it; staining it with the colours of the aurora borealis that danced and played in the heavens. As i reached the waters edge i sighed enjoying the freezing water lapping softly at my toes, putting my mind at ease and allowing the human world to melt away-leaving me alone with mine.

I take more and more steps into the water, embracing the chill, until I'm wading, waist deep. I bring my arms up above my head, stretching out my body and then I push myself into the water letting it envelope me.I sink below the shimmering mirror, my eyes adjusting instantly as my rich, mahogany hair washed around my head and shoulders, framing my vision with dark strands, like a giant squid's tentacles.

I swam deeper past the point where humans would implode-savouring the silence and the feeling of being alone and detached. It was true bliss- the reason my kind chose to occupy the water all those years ago. A smile stretched across my face as a hulking creature came into view and my monster reached out a great tentacle to greet me.
