I love staring at the night sky. I like to daydream that there's someone out there just like me, and they need a friend. And about a year ago, I found one. If my calculations are correct, this alien lives on Jupiter. Tonight, I think I might have found a way to communicate with him or her. I made a device, and its waves bounce off space satellites. The waves, if they hit the right part of the right satellite, should make it to Jupiter. Hopefully they'll reach the alien I've found.

The alien found my signal. She's responding. In the movies, aliens always speak like "Be, boo, bop, Be-do, bloop, blurp," but I've figured out and memorized the whole "language." Maybe I was overly prepared and too confident that I knew what I was doing though, because the crackling voice that came on the speaker spoke English. I was confused at first, stunned that I knew the words this alien was speaking. "H-hello?" I said hesitantly.
"Hi... um, who is this and how do you know about me? If you're from Earth, I come in peace!"
"Oh!" I responded. "Don't worry. I am from Earth, but I don't want to hurt you. Listen, I'm just a fourteen-year-old girl wondering if I'm alone in the universe. From the sound of your voice, I'm guessing you're a girl alien-"
"Excuse me?! I'm sorry, did you just call me an ALIEN?? Although we are from another planet, I do not expect to be treated poorly, missy. We have done enough research to know that people from Earth are called HUMANS. We would like to be called by our own names, like humans call other humans by their names. We don't have a specific word for the whole population of Jupiter. Call me Tina. What should I call you?"
"I'm very sorry. On Earth scientists don't even know that there's other life out there. They'll be thrilled once they find out! I'm sure you'll be pleased. We will have a rover come over and study your planet and the life on it. Maybe some of you can even come over and live on Earth! We'll find out what you're called, how you live, EVERYTHING!!!" I replied. "Oh yeah, and call me Malila."
"Okay Malila, how about you DON'T tell scientists about us and we can be friends. None of us want to be studied, taken away, any of that. We like how we live just fine, and we can easily study from afar. Now, if I find out you DO tell them, you'll be in big trouble. Not with me, but with the ENTIRE PLANET."
"Um, great?" I had a questioning tone, not sure if this is a threat or an invitation to be friends. I think it's both. We can be friends though, which is really all I wanted in the first place. We agree to talk every night, and "hang up," which is really just cutting off the signal. I go to bed, happy that my device worked, happy to have a new friend, Tina.
