chapter four.BROOKE SHIFTED HER WEIGHT in the saddle, the leather creaking softly as she adjusted her grip on the reins. The late afternoon sun cast a warm glow over the dusty arena, illuminating Ryan and Jake as they settled into their boxes, anticipation crackling in the air. "Ryan, honey, I'll buy you a drink this week if you can out-rope me," she called, her voice teasing yet playful.
"What about a kiss—"
"Come on, let's be realistic here, peaches," Brooke sarcastically said as Lloyd opened the shoot, the two men chasing the steer down.
She wolf whistled as ryan heeled the steer, "How come you can't rope like that when you're roping for money?"
Ryan rolled his eyes getting defensive, "Then I'm thinking about the money not the fun."
"Rodeo ain't about havin' fun, it's about been better then everyone else," Brooke called out with a laugh.
"It's fucking practice," Lloyd yelled , "Walker. Brooke. Get your asses in there."
Brooke backed Cash into the box, opting to heel considering it was the harder of the two choices, "you miss this, cowboy, and I'll cut the string off your fuckin' guitar in your sleep."
Walker shot her a deadpan look, his brow furrowing. "I don't miss."
"Hey guys," Jimmy called from the sidelines, leaning against the fence. "How bad's the luck from putting your hat on the bed?"
"Jesus, Jimmy," Brooke scoffed, shaking her head while Colby chimed in, "About as bad as changing a horse's barn name."
"Hey, what's this horse's name?" Jimmy asked, furrowing his brow in confusion.
"Jimmy, you've been riding this goddamn horse for a month and you still don't know his name?" Brooke replied, exasperation creeping into her voice.
"It's Ray."
"I thought you rode Ray."
"Nah, I ride Owen."
"Alright, well, that's not quite the same as changing it—"
