"Surely you're not gonna actually drink that..."
"Why not? I need the caffeine,"
"But it's 1 part coffee 9 parts sugar! You'll be bouncing off the walls before you finish it!"
"Aw, you're worried about me? How sweet,"
"I'm not worried about you, I'm just terrified of the outcome." I linked arms with Draken as we left the coffee shop and out into the freezing winter morning.
"I was just kidding. This isn't for me,"
"Then who's it for?"
Draken sighed dramatically and looked down at me as we crossed the street. "Take a wild guess,"
"Mikey?"
"Ding ding ding! As if Halloween being a few days from now wasn't enough to excite him,"
"Speaking of Halloween, I got an invite for a party at Mikey's house. Did you get one?"
"I helped him plan it. I kind of have to go because if I don't they might do something stupid that they'll regret in the morning." Draken scratched at his neck and looked away, mumbling something under his breath.
"Sorry what? I couldn't catch that last part,"
"It's nothing,"
"No you definitely said something." I teased.
"It's just that I wanted to spend Halloween alone with you- Oh sorry, I have to take this." As Draken's phone started ringing, he unhooked his arm from mine and answered the phone, moving farther away.
I watched as his face slowly changed from a gentle, content expression to the face of a frustrated mom with hyper kids.
"Yes, I understand. I'll be there in a few minutes." He then hung up on the caller and came back over to me.
"Bad news?"
"Horrible news. My boss is calling me in, so I gotta go,"
"You have a job?"
"Part time waiter. Paying for Mikey's food all the time isn't cheap. Sorry to ditch you in the middle of our date. Can we pick this back up later, Takashi?"
"What if I walk you to your job and we split off there?"
"Er... I'd rather you didn't. Look, I'll see you later." And with that, Draken took off, leaving me standing in the middle of the sidewalk, bewildered and upset. Why was he being so secretive?!
________________________________________________________________________________I couldn't get Mitsuya's pained face out of my mind. Even after I'd done my shift at the restaurant, all I wanted to do was call him up and explain everything. But I couldn't do that. Not yet. The surprise would be ruined otherwise.
As I was leaving the train stop on my way to deliver Mikey's cold coffee, I noticed that my phone was ringing again.
"Hello?"
"Hey Kenchin! Is Mitsuya with you?"
"Mikey, what is this about? The last time you called and asked that question something bad happened!"
"Oh I was just wondering if he was with you. I'm waiting for you two at the place. I got some money from my grandpa and now you have enough for it,"
"Mikey, you didn't have to do that. I could have paid for it myself!"
"But this is payback for all those times you paid for my food and literally every other time you've paid for me. In fact, it doesn't even begin to pay for it, but if you can grab Mitsuya and meet back up here at... let's say noon? Then we can reveal the surprise. Also, you can dump my coffee. It's probably cold by now,"
